Palmira Becomes América de Cali's New Home After Bogotá Falls Through Over Incidents
The earthquake left Pascual Guerrero unfit to host fans, and Dimayor stripped the club of its chance to play in the capital following the clashes against Santa Fe.
Just a few weeks ago, nobody was talking about Palmira when América de Cali's home games came up. The plan was Bogotá. But Colombian soccer, once again, took an unexpected turn and ended up sending the Mechita to a venue that was never part of the original plan.
It all started for a reason that had nothing to do with the sporting regulations: the earthquake that struck Colombia left Pascual Guerrero unable to host fans. Given that situation, América asked Dimayor for permission to move its home matches to the capital. The answer was yes, and four matches were approved for Bogotá.
Up to that point, everything seemed to be on track. The problem came from another direction: the incidents recorded during América's visit to Santa Fe. Clashes between fans, which ended up spilling onto the field, set off alarm bells and prompted a drastic decision from Colombian soccer's governing body.
Dimayor issued an official statement and took away América's chance to play in Bogotá. Overnight, the club was left without a confirmed venue for its home matches, right at a moment when it was already dealing with the complication of its Cali stadium being out of commission.
Palmira, the City That Lent a Hand
Amid that uncertain scenario, Palmira emerged as an alternative. The local administration offered its stadium so that América could keep competing without further setbacks, a gesture that did not go unnoticed by the club's leadership.
Tulio Gómez, América de Cali's president, took to his X account to publicly thank the mayor of Palmira for the support he provided.
I want to express our most sincere gratitude to the Mayor for the support given to América de Cali and for allowing us to play our matches at the Palmira stadium.Tulio Gómez
The club president didn't stop there. Later in his message, he pointed out that the decision hadn't been easy or free of pushback.
Despite the fierce opposition and the many difficulties that came up, you stood firm and committed in your support for our institution.Tulio Gómez
And he closed with a message of thanks that sums up well the moment the scarlet institution is going through, caught between the lack of a home stadium and the sudden loss of its Bogotá venue.
We Americanos hold deep gratitude toward you because, when many turned their backs on us, we found in your administration a friendly and supportive hand.Tulio Gómez
With Palmira as its new temporary home, América de Cali will try to put the turbulence of recent weeks behind it and focus on what really matters: picking up points. The schedule doesn't wait, and the Mechita needs stability so it doesn't lose ground while it sorts out, deep down, where and when it will be able to feel at home again in its own house.
