Paris FC controls from start to finish, beats Strasbourg 2-1

Paris FC got down to business early at the Stade Jean Bouin and came away with a 2-1 win over Strasbourg that keeps them right behind the leaders in Ligue 1. Ilan Kebbal opened the scoring in the 17th minute and Pablo Pagis added a second right at the start of the second half, before an own goal from Moustapha Mbow, in stoppage time, gave a bit of late drama to a match the home side controlled from start to finish.

The first half was practically a one-way affair. Even before the goal, Lassine Sinayoko and Kebbal had already tested Strasbourg's goalkeeper with shots that met solid saves. The reward came in the 17th minute: Kebbal finished with his left foot from inside the box, through the middle of the goal, off a Sinayoko assist, for the 1-0. Strasbourg could barely get near the opposing box in those first 45 minutes, and Paris FC went into the break with the slim lead but a level of control reflected in the sheer volume of chances created.

At the start of the second half, the script didn't change much. Strasbourg had a couple of chances, including a header from Sebastian Nanasi that went wide, but Paris FC struck again on a quick break: in the 56th minute, Maxime Lopez set up the play with a cross off a counterattack and Pablo Pagis finished with his right foot, into the top corner, for the 2-0. That goal pretty much settled the outcome. Strasbourg made three near-simultaneous substitutions shortly after in search of a response, and Paris FC answered with changes of its own that kept the pace up without dropping its guard.

The home side kept creating danger through Luca Koleosho and Rudy Matondo without adding to the lead, until deep into stoppage time came the only real scare for the home fans: in the 87th minute, an own goal from Moustapha Mbow made it 2-1 and forced Paris FC to manage the closing minutes, which stretched into six added minutes with no further drama.

What the numbers say

The scoreline reflected fairly well what happened on the field. Paris FC was clearly superior in chance creation, with 17 shots to Strasbourg's 5, and an even bigger gap in shots on target.

The xG numbers generated in the match (an in-house estimate calculated from the shots taken) also back up that superiority: 0.93 for Paris FC against just 0.26 for Strasbourg, a gap that confirms the home side didn't just have more of the ball, it carried it into the opposing box with far more real danger.

The preview had pointed to a much closer match than what actually played out. We projected a 37 percent chance of a Paris FC win, 29 percent for a draw, and 34 percent for Strasbourg, with expected goals of 1.39 for the home side and 1.34 for the visitors. What happened on the field was far from that balance: Paris FC's control was much clearer than expected, and Strasbourg's goal only arrived in stoppage time and came off an own goal, not as the product of any offensive plan of their own.
