Pedro Aquino undergoes knee surgery, expected to be out four to six months
The Peruvian midfielder, who terminated his contract with Santos Laguna and barely saw the field at Alianza Lima, went under the knife in Rosario to address a knee issue he had been carrying for some time.
A knee that gave him no peace ended up deciding the next chapter of Pedro Aquino's career. The 31 year old Peruvian midfielder went into surgery earlier this month to have his right knee operated on, an issue that had been dogging him for a while and had kept him from getting the consistent playing time every professional needs to stay sharp.
The procedure took place in the city of Rosario, Argentina, where doctors performed an arthroscopy for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. The decision came after Aquino terminated his contract with Santos Laguna earlier this year, a move that finally opened the door for him to deal with the physical problem once and for all.
Now comes the waiting game. The plan calls for the midfielder to go through the first stage of his rehabilitation in Argentina, and according to the medical diagnosis, the expected recovery time runs four to six months. No shortcuts this time: the goal is for him to return to the field without carrying the same issue that limited him so much in recent years.
A present defined by a lack of minutes
If there's one thing that has hurt Aquino lately, it's exactly that: a lack of continuity. After leaving Liga MX without much of a role, the midfielder wasn't able to turn things around at Alianza Lima either, a club where he played just fifteen matches in a year, with only five starts, all of them coming last season.
So far in 2026, his involvement has been minimal: he's logged just eleven minutes against Melgar at Matute. That number sums up the physical state he'd been dealing with and helps explain why he decided to stop and get surgery rather than keep pushing his body.
With the surgery done and the recovery process underway, the priority for Aquino now shifts elsewhere: taking his time to get his body back to full strength before even thinking about a return to the field.
