Peñarol crushes Juventud 17-0 to stand alone atop women's soccer standings

Seventeen goals in a single match don't come around every weekend, let alone in a blowout that leaves a team standing alone at the top. That's exactly what happened at the Complejo Rentistas, where Peñarol demolished Juventud by a resounding 17-0 in matchday seven of the women's soccer Clausura tournament.

The star of the afternoon was Tatiana Magallanes, who scored five goals. She wasn't the only one to find the net repeatedly: Guillermina Basso and Iliana Guedes each notched hat tricks, Stefany Suárez scored twice, and Micaela Domínguez, Josefina Villa, Manuela Olivera and Paulina Monteiro rounded out the scoring, each adding one of her own. With that result, the Carboneras remain the sole leaders of the championship.

The rest of the matchday also shook up the table. Second-place Montevideo City Torque gave Canadian no room to breathe, winning 5-1 to keep pace at the top. At Estadio Franzini, Nacional and Defensor Sporting split the points in a tighter contest: Jessica Pastilha put the tricolores ahead 1-0 in the 76th minute, but Defensor found the equalizer just nine minutes later, in the 85th, to close it out at 1-1.

Danubio, meanwhile, cruised past Wanderers with a clear 3-0 win, while Liverpool couldn't get past a 1-1 draw against San Jacinto in another of the day's matchups.

How the top of the table looks

With these results and two matchdays remaining before the regular phase wraps up, Peñarol sits firmly atop the standings with 21 points, opening a clear gap on the rest of the field. Montevideo City Torque follows with 18 points, while Nacional and Liverpool share third place with 13 points apiece.

The Carboneras' edge isn't just about points anymore: it also shows up in goal difference, something that could end up mattering in a standings picture that's tightly bunched in the middle if things come down to goal differential. Two matchdays remain, and the question now is whether anyone can close the gap on Peñarol before the Clausura ends.
