Peñarol hosts Boston River at the Centenario with first place on the line

Barred from playing at the Campeón del Siglo due to a sanction, the Clausura leader looks to hold onto the top spot against a rival arriving on a three-game losing streak with an interim coach.

Winning while sitting atop the table always demands a little extra, and Peñarol knows it. On Saturday, September 26, the club hosts Boston River at Estadio Centenario in matchday eight of the Torneo Clausura, arriving with the advantage of being the sole leader after Liverpool and Racing drew in the previous round. That tie handed the black and yellows sole possession of first place in the Annual Table, an edge they have no intention of giving up easily.

Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. in Argentina, Chile and Uruguay, and 4:30 p.m. for those following along from Colombia, Peru and Ecuador. Fans looking to watch live will need Disney+'s Premium Plan, available only in South America.

There's one detail that changes the picture for this match: Peñarol won't be able to play at the Campeón del Siglo due to a sanction, so the club will be the home side without its home crowd, playing as the nominal visitor at the Centenario. It's an odd setup for a team that needs to keep collecting three points at a time to avoid loosening its grip on first place.

A rival in need of a spark

Boston River isn't going through its best stretch. El Sastre has dropped three straight games in the Clausura, and in the middle of that slide, Ignacio Ithurralde's run as head coach came to an end. Diego Jaume now takes the reins on an interim basis, tasked with stopping the bleeding on the field of a title contender, no less.

To pull that off, the team will need its most dangerous wide players to show up, with Facundo Aristegui and Leandro Suhr bringing the pace to create problems and disrupt the buildup of a Peñarol side that usually handles the ball well.

Peñarol's key pieces

On the other side, the partnership between Leonel Jaime and Leandro Umpiérrez has been clicking and is one of the reasons the team looks so sharp going forward. Add to that the work of Eric Remedi a bit further back, feeding that attacking duo as it looks to keep building chemistry match by match.

As for recent form, the numbers back the home side: Peñarol comes off a 2-1 win over Cerro last round and has reached 12 points in the Clausura. Boston River, meanwhile, fell 2-1 to Progreso and sits on 8 points.

Recent history also favors the black and yellows. The last meeting between the two sides came on July 18, at the Campeón del Siglo, in the Torneo Intermedio, and ended 3-0 in Peñarol's favor with goals from Eduardo Darias, Franco Romero and an own goal from Martín González.

With that recent result fresh in mind and Boston River desperate to snap its slide, the clash at the Centenario promises a bit of everything: a leader unwilling to cede ground, and a newly arrived coach in urgent need of a turnaround.
