Pep Chavarría leaves Rayo Vallecano to sign with Chelsea through 2031

The left back signs for 20 million euros to fill the void left by Marc Cucurella at Stamford Bridge

Pep Chavarría leaves Rayo Vallecano to sign with Chelsea through 2031

A 28-year-old left back who was playing in Spain's fourth tier just seven seasons ago has now signed a contract through 2031 with one of the biggest clubs in the world. That's how fast a career can change. Pep Chavarría is leaving Rayo Vallecano to wear Chelsea blue at Stamford Bridge, and he's doing it at the exact moment Xabi Alonso's Chelsea needed to fill a major gap at left back.

That gap was left by Marc Cucurella, who departed for Real Madrid, and the London club wasted no time finding a replacement. They found one in a player who had spent four seasons as a fixture in Vallecas. Chelsea paid roughly 20 million euros for a player who, notably, still had a contract with Rayo running through 2030. Nothing suggested this deal would come cheap, and it didn't.

What stands out most is the journey. Chavarría started out at UE Figueres, the club from his hometown, and in 2018 moved up to UE Olot, already in Spain's third tier. From there he joined Real Zaragoza in 2020, playing in Segunda Division and steadily improving until he won over Rayo Vallecano, who signed him in 2022. He hasn't stopped growing since: 105 La Liga appearances in the Rayo shirt and a Conference League final that put him on the radar of the sport's biggest clubs.

And this wasn't a last-minute interest. According to reports, the negotiation had been in the works for several weeks, ever since Chelsea showed interest and the player himself let Rayo know he wanted to make the jump. Deals like this don't come together overnight, and in this case everything suggests Chavarría was set on trying his luck in the Premier League.

The player himself didn't hide his excitement the moment the signing became official.

I'm really excited to get started. This is a dream for me, because Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in the world. It's a huge opportunity, but I'm ready and I'll work hard to help the team achieve success. There are a lot of people who helped me get here and I have to thank my family. They've always supported me and today is only possible because of them.Pep Chavarría

An immediate challenge at Stamford Bridge

Now the question is how Chavarría fits into Xabi Alonso's plans. He arrives to compete right away for a spot left open by Cucurella's departure, at a club where internal competition is never easy. But his rise, from Spain's fourth division to the Premier League in barely seven years, speaks to a player used to climbing levels without missing a step. Rayo Vallecano loses one of its standout players from recent seasons, but can take satisfaction in having been the launching pad for a footballer who now faces, with a contract through 2031 in hand, the biggest challenge of his career.
