Peru adds Arequipa and Cusco as home venues for World Cup Qualifying

Playing in Lima will no longer be the only option for the Peruvian national team. The Peruvian Football Federation (FPF) confirmed that Arequipa, Cusco and Puno will join the capital as possible home venues during South American World Cup Qualifying on the road to the 2030 World Cup. And the idea isn't just to spread matches around the country: it's to make things uncomfortable for opponents who are least used to playing thousands of feet above sea level.

FPF general director Jean Ferrari confirmed the news through La Bicolor: two of those cities will already be put to the test during the November FIFA window. The opponents Peru will face that month haven't been determined yet, but the venues have: the UNSA Monumental Stadium in Arequipa, and the Inca Garcilaso de la Vega in Cusco.

The logic behind the move is simple. Altitude can work in Peru's favor, especially in the toughest matches. Within the federation itself, the plan is clear: this strategy won't be used on just any matchday, but will be saved for the hardest crossroads of the qualifying road, with names like Argentina and Brazil on the radar.

A decision that could also reshape call-ups

This doesn't stop at picking a stadium. The move could have a direct effect on Mano Menezes's call-ups. If the national team is going to play at altitude against the heavyweight opponents, it makes sense for the coach to pay closer attention to players who are already used to those conditions in the domestic league, like those turning out for Cienciano, Deportivo Garcilaso or Sport Huancayo. The reasoning is simple: being acclimated beforehand can make a real physical difference against teams arriving from sea level.

For now, the opponents for November are still to be confirmed, but the international calendar is already set. The next window of matches for national teams around the world will run from November 9 to 17, 2026, the last of the year, and that's where Peru will put its bet on Arequipa and Cusco as new qualifying venues to the test for the first time.
