Germán Pezzella arrives at Peñarol fresh off World Cup title with Argentina

A world champion strolling through the Campeón del Siglo. That is how Peñarol experienced the arrival of Germán Pezzella, who touched down in Uruguay this Saturday to join the black and gold squad and, while he was at it, treated himself to watching a clásico against Nacional live, one that will go down as his first official brush with the carbonero world.

The Argentine defender, 35 years old, signed a contract through December 2027, an 18 month deal that ties him to the Uruguayan club through the end of that season. The news was confirmed to ESPN Uruguay by sources close to Peñarol, and this is no ordinary signing: he is one of the last remaining world champions from the Argentina national team to arrive in Uruguayan soccer.

Pezzella did not just lift the trophy in Qatar 2022. Before that he had been part of the 2021 Copa América and the Finalissima played at Wembley against Italy. Three titles with the Albiceleste that speak to a player used to the big moments, something Peñarol knows how to read well: beyond what he brings on the field, the club is banking on his experience paying off in the locker room too, in the squad's day to day life.

A reunion with Olivera

Pezzella is not walking into completely unfamiliar territory. He already spoke with Maximiliano Olivera, Peñarol's captain, with whom he shared a locker room at Fiorentina in Italy. That prior connection could ease an adjustment that, either way, starts with an unusual advantage: having watched a Peñarol-Nacional match from the stands before ever making his debut.

His career began at River Plate, the club that developed him and with which he won the 2014 Copa Sudamericana and the 2015 Copa Libertadores, two titles that already showed a center back who could handle decisive moments. Then came the jump to Europe, with stints at Real Betis in Spain and at Fiorentina, where he played several seasons and established himself as one of the top caliber center backs in Italian soccer during that period.

Now, carrying that résumé with him, Pezzella takes on a different chapter: that of a player arriving in the late stage of his career, but with a World Cup and two more titles with Argentina to his name. For Peñarol, the bet is clear: add stature, international experience and a brand of leadership forged in some of the most demanding locker rooms in South America and Europe.
