Philippe's late strike finally gives Paderborn the win that had eluded them
A left-footed strike from Rayan Philippe three minutes from time sealed a 1-0 win over Hamburger SV, reward for a dominance SC Paderborn 07 had shown for nearly the entire match.

There were barely three minutes left when Rayan Philippe showed up from outside the box to score the only goal of the match. His low, left-footed strike, hugging the left post, sealed a 1-0 win for SC Paderborn 07 over Hamburger SV at the Home Deluxe Arena in the Bundesliga. The player had just come on as a substitute and needed only a few minutes to decide a match that had resisted the home side for nearly the entire second half.
The goal stemmed from a free kick taken by Felix Götze, another player who had come off the bench, finding Philippe with space to unleash a shot that ended up just inside the left post, beating Daniel Heuer Fernandes. It was the reward for a persistence Paderborn had shown long before that moment.
A dominance that took time to pay off
The home side drove the game for nearly the entire match, stringing together long spells of possession and crosses into the box that created danger in flashes. Already in the first half they gave a warning with a shot from Santiago Castañeda that was blocked after a cross from Jano ter Horst, and with Tjark Scheller, who from close range sent a ball just wide following a corner kick.
In the second half, Paderborn piled up chances without being able to convert them. Castañeda tried his luck on several occasions, Steffen Tigges headed on goal only for Heuer Fernandes to respond with a save, and Laurin Curda struck the left post with a shot off a corner. Raphael Obermair also had his moment, with a shot that was again saved by the visiting goalkeeper. Hamburger SV, for their part, barely threatened: a shot from Fábio Vieira early on, an attempt from Otto Stange that went wide and, late in the match, a header from Sebastiaan Bornauw that drew a strong save from the home goalkeeper were their clearest chances. With so much pressure and so little to show for it, Philippe's goal ended up being the logical reward for a superiority the scoreline had not reflected until that point.
| Statistic | SC Paderborn 07 | Hamburger SV |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 61.6 | 38.4 |
| Shots | 16 | 8 |
| Shots on target | 6 | 1 |
| Corners | 6 | 3 |
| Passes | 532 | 332 |
| Fouls committed | 12 | 15 |
The post-match expected goals numbers confirm that gap: by our calculation, Paderborn generated 1.473 expected goals to Hamburger SV's 0.393, a margin that backs up the territorial and chance-creation dominance the home side had over the course of the 90 minutes.
The result also stands in contrast to what we had projected before kickoff. Our preview gave Paderborn a 38% chance of winning, a 27% chance of a draw and a 35% chance for Hamburger SV, with expected goals of 1.53 for the home side and 1.45 for the visitors, pointing to a close, goal-filled match. What played out instead was a game of wide home dominance and just a single goal, quite far from that initial script.
What the result means in the standings
In the table, both sides arrived with similar records: Paderborn had 8 points from 7 matches played (2 wins, 2 draws and 3 losses) and Hamburger SV had 9 points also from 7 outings (3 wins, no draws and 4 losses), just 1 point separating the two before this meeting. With the win, SC Paderborn 07 picks up three points that let them close the gap on their direct rival in the standings, while Hamburger SV heads home empty-handed, after a match in which their offensive output was notably thin against the home side's persistence.
The closing stretch, with the substitutions of Felix Götze and Rayan Philippe coming off the bench, proved decisive: it was that very pairing that combined to tip a match SC Paderborn 07 had dominated almost in its entirety, but which until the 87th minute had refused to turn into a goal.
