Pipo González Returns to Alajuelense at 38, Right When the Defense Is in Crisis

When everything seems to be moving at once, some clubs don't go shopping for new names. They go knock on the door of the ones who already know the house. That's what Alajuelense did this week, and the result is that Giancarlo "Pipo" González is putting on the red and black jersey again at 38 years old, right when the Liga needs him most.

The context couldn't be more demanding. The club fired Ismael Rescalvo and handed the bench, on a temporary basis, to Bryan Ruiz, alongside Wílmer López and Javier Delgado. With that change barely settled, a key date arrives too: this Thursday Alajuelense hosts Marathón in the quarterfinals of the Central American Cup, following the 2-2 draw in the first leg in Honduras. A spot in the semifinals is on the line, and right in the middle of that noise, González resurfaced.

The big question was whether his return had come in time for him to play. It turns out it had. According to La Nación, Alajuelense completed his registration with Unafut in time and then included the defender on the roster submitted to Concacaf for the match. The rules allow it: clubs can add players as long as the competition squad hasn't hit the 35-player cap, provided they're properly registered with the club and its league, and the final list of 23 for each match must be submitted no later than 44 hours in advance. The Liga got the paperwork done, so Pipo is cleared to play. Now it's up to Bryan Ruiz whether he actually uses him.

A Backline Crying Out for Help

The call-up isn't just about the weight of a name. On the back line, Alajuelense came up short on options. Alexis Gamboa is still recovering, and Aarón Salazar suffered a torn lateral knee ligament against Cartaginés. On top of that, Santiago van der Putten and Guillermo Villalobos both left during the first half of the year. Given all that, it's no surprise the club turned to a familiar face who has already won three national titles, the 2023 Copa tournament and the 2023 Central American Cup itself wearing this shirt.

González himself summed up the moment with a message that fit perfectly with what the club is going through:

Few stretches sum up that idea as well as this one. Alajuelense fired its coach, has been dragging results that have raised the pressure, has key injuries on the back line, and this Thursday has a huge chunk of its international campaign on the line. Within a matter of days, it called on Bryan Ruiz to coach and Pipo González to defend. When the urgency hit hardest, the Liga went looking for answers among its own people once again.
