Platense and Coquimbo Unido Split the Points in Dramatic Round of 16 Draw

Platense and Coquimbo Unido Split the Points in Dramatic Round of 16 Draw

Platense and Coquimbo Unido drew 1-1 at Estadio Ciudad de Vicente Lopez, in a round of 16 match in the Copa Libertadores that the Argentine side had nearly wrapped up until Guido Vadala snatched the win away from the home team deep into stoppage time. The result leaves the tie wide open, with a draw that leaves neither side fully satisfied given how it came about.

An Early Goal and a Cruel Ending

The game broke open in the 34th minute, when Luciano Gimenez headed home a cross from Juan Ignacio Saborido to make it 1-0 for Platense, burying it in the top left corner. Before that play, the hosts had already tested the waters with attempts from Ignacio Vazquez, Franco Zapiola and Gimenez himself, while Coquimbo Unido answered through Lucas Pratto as its main offensive outlet.

In the second half, Platense managed the lead and had the chance to seal the result from the penalty spot: in the 78th minute the referee called a penalty for a foul by Luis Riveros on Guido Mainero, a decision confirmed after VAR review in the 80th minute. Mainero himself, however, missed the ensuing spot kick two minutes later, a squandered chance that would come back to haunt his team. The punishment arrived in the 93rd minute: Guido Vadala, who had come on from the bench, finished with his right foot from inside the box after an assist from Cristian Zavala, on a play that also went to VAR review before being confirmed. The 1-1 scoreline held until the final whistle.

What the Numbers Say

Platense was the more dominant side statistically, with more possession and clearer chances, though Coquimbo Unido built up a good amount of pressure in the second half, especially through corner kicks.

The shots on target figure stands out in particular: Platense put eight shots between the posts to just one for Coquimbo Unido, a gap that confirms the Argentine side's offensive dominance, though the visitors' goal came precisely on that single accurate look at goal. Based on an in-house expected goals estimate calculated after the fact using the match's shots, Platense generated 2.778 xG to 1.148 for the Chilean side, a gap that backs up the home team's edge in scoring chances, even though the result ended up rewarding the visitors' efficiency at just the right moment.

Expectations Versus Reality

The pre-match outlook had pointed to an even contest, with a 38% chance of a Platense win, 33% for a draw and 29% for a Coquimbo Unido win, with total expected goals of 2.17. The outcome ended up matching the scenario that was, on paper, least likely for the home side, the draw, though the path to get there was far more dramatic than any projection could have foreseen: a missed penalty by the very team in control of the match, and a visiting goal in the dying seconds.

What the Result Leaves Behind

Platense is left with the feeling of having let a win slip through its fingers, one it had within reach more than once, between the missed penalty and the sustained control it held for much of the match. Coquimbo Unido, on the other hand, comes away with a psychological boost from its bench's ability to respond, with Vadala as the unlikely hero of the equalizer. The round of 16 tie remains level, with everything still to be decided in the games ahead.
