Platense to Play Two Games Behind Closed Doors After Clashes With Fluminense in Libertadores

They won on the field but lost off it. Platense bowed out of the 2026 CONMEBOL Libertadores in the quarterfinals after beating Fluminense 2-1 at Estadio Ciudad de Vicente Lopez, a result that wasn't enough after a 2-0 loss at the Maracana in the first leg. And just as the "Calamar" tried to come to terms with the elimination, another blow arrived that had nothing to do with what happened on the pitch.

That's because, moments after the final whistle, a group of the club's fans were involved in incidents that ended up costing the institution dearly. Platense supporters ran onto the field and clashed with police. There was also theft of flags belonging to Fluminense fans. That episode didn't go unnoticed by CONMEBOL, which on Friday notified the Vicente Lopez club of the sanction imposed over the violence that broke out after the match.

It was the Agency for the Prevention of Violence in Sports (APREVIDE), an agency under the Buenos Aires provincial government's Ministry of Security, that finalized the punishment. The ruling is clear: Platense must play its next two official matches behind closed doors, with no fans allowed in the stands.

Two Games Without Fans

The first chapter of this sanction will play out soon. Next Monday, Platense will host Newell's in matchday ten of the Torneo Clausura, and it will do so in an empty stadium. The second game without fans comes at a particularly sensitive moment for supporters: none other than the derby against Argentinos Juniors, set for the weekend of October 10 and 11. Two important dates on the calendar that the team will have to face without the backing of its fans.

The club didn't stay quiet and officially announced the sanction, while making clear it doesn't plan to accept it without a fight. In the statement, Platense explained that the measure stems from APREVIDE's Resolution No. 2026-176, issued "following the widely reported events that took place at the conclusion of the match against Fluminense on 9/15/2026."

The matter now moves to administrative channels. In the meantime, the squad will have to focus on the Torneo Clausura knowing that, for at least two matchdays, it will play in a silent stadium, without the usual color and noise of its fans. A stark contrast to the club's last European night, or rather, South American night, in the Libertadores.
