Platense and Coquimbo Unido: the Longshots Nobody Saw Coming in the Libertadores Round of 16

Two clubs that once lived in the shadows are hitting the best stretch in their history, and now they're challenging the continent's powerhouses.

Some matchups explain themselves the moment you glance at the fixture list. This one doesn't. Platense against Coquimbo Unido in the round of 16 of the 2026 Copa Libertadores is, for South American soccer, close to a statistical oddity. Neither club comes from the sport's aristocracy. Neither one showed up on anybody's list of contenders when the tournament kicked off. And yet here they are, one step from cracking the continent's final eight.

One club spent its whole existence in the shadow of Buenos Aires' giants. The other was born in a port city in northern Chile that looks out toward the Pacific more than it does toward Santiago. Just a couple of seasons ago, Platense was fighting to avoid relegation from Argentina's top flight. Today it's competing in a continental knockout round. The present moment hit in a strange way: the club arrives at this series still adjusting to a coaching change in the domestic league, yet carried along by the best international campaign in its history.

Coquimbo Unido, known as Los Piratas, followed a similar arc. Decades of bouncing between divisions without ever coming close to Chile's elite, until 2020, when the club reached the semifinals of the Copa Sudamericana and started building a name for itself on the continent.

Two Clubs That Represent Their People

Platense's heart belongs to the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Saavedra, even though it plays its home games in Vicente Lopez. Coquimbo Unido is, quite literally, the club of the port: its crest and nickname trace back to the maritime history of a city that built its own identity far from Chile's political and economic power centers. In a sport increasingly dominated by massive budgets, these two clubs offer a different story, one about teams that can still be explained through their people and their streets.

Neither club reached this stage by accident. Platense punched its ticket to the Libertadores by winning the 2025 Argentine Torneo Apertura, the greatest achievement in the club's history. Coquimbo did the same by becoming Chilean champion in 2025, a title that earned it a return to the Libertadores after 34 years (its only previous appearance dated back to 1992).

The group stage was no mere formality for either side. Platense drew a group with Corinthians, Peñarol and Independiente Santa Fe, and still advanced: it won in Montevideo against a Peñarol side with five continental titles in its trophy case, then sealed qualification with a win in Sao Paulo against Corinthians. Coquimbo shared a group with Nacional de Montevideo (the club with the most appearances in the tournament's history), Universitario de Lima and Deportes Tolima, and finished first in the group.

That's what makes this series so appealing. It doesn't pit two established powerhouses against each other, but rather two projects riding the best stretch of their recent history, no longer satisfied just to say they showed up. They want to keep moving forward. And even though only one of them will stay alive in the Cup, both have already left behind something that won't show up in any standings table: proof that in South American soccer, there's still room for stories nobody had on their radar.
