Porto hosts Manchester City at the Dragao in Champions League league-phase opener
Two teams still unbeaten in their domestic leagues meet Tuesday at Estadio do Dragao.
The Champions League brings back one of those matchups that already carries recent history. Porto hosts Manchester City at the Estadio do Dragao in the first matchday of the league phase, and even though there's plenty of tournament left to play, starting off with a win carries extra weight: nobody wants to be playing catch-up from the opening round.
The match is set for Tuesday, September 8, kicking off at 4:00 PM (Argentina, Chile and Uruguay) and 2:00 PM (Colombia, Ecuador and Peru), and can be streamed live through Disney+'s Premium plan.
What's on the line
The single-league format forces every match to be treated like a mini-final. Porto needs to make home advantage count in front of its own fans, something that has always given European visitors trouble at the Dragao. Manchester City, for its part, knows that grabbing three points away from home is nearly a must if it wants to finish among the top eight, the group that earns a direct ticket to the round of 16 without going through the playoff round.
At Porto, two names keep coming up whenever the attack is discussed: Gabriel Veiga and André Silva. The Portuguese club also beefed up its attack this transfer window with the arrival of Santiago Giménez, a signing that adds fresh options up front. On the other side, Manchester City still leans on Erling Haaland as its main scoring threat, but he's not alone: Rayan Cherki and Antoine Semenyo give Pep Guardiola extra options for movement and width on the flanks.
How both teams arrive
Confidence is running high on both sides. Porto arrived at this matchday with a perfect record in the Portuguese league, winning its first five matches. Manchester City hasn't slipped up in the Premier League either, winning all three matches it has played so far. Two teams arriving without a hitch and riding high morale, something that doesn't always guarantee anything in the Champions League, but that's no small detail when it comes to gauging a squad's mood.
The recent history between the two sides includes a close antecedent: they met in the 2020 group stage. In that series, Manchester City won 3-1 at home in England before the two sides played to a scoreless draw on Portuguese soil. It's not a frequent matchup, which adds some extra spice to this new chapter.
With the Dragao as the stage and both teams unbeaten in their respective leagues, this first test of the league phase promises to show just how ready each side is to fight for a spot near the top of the table right from the start.
