Portugal weathers Danish fury, routs Denmark 4-2 at Parken to lead Group A4
With two assists from Bruno Fernandes and a goal from Goncalo Ramos, Portugal got past a Denmark side that twice came back to level before falling 2-4 in the Nations League.

Portugal needed just 12 minutes to go ahead at Parken, but Denmark refused to fold quietly. The match finished 2-4 in a goal-fest that left Portugal firmly in control of the UEFA Nations League group and Denmark with the sense of having been outplayed where it mattered most.
Nearly the entire script was written in the first 25 minutes. Joao Cancelo opened the scoring in the 12th minute with a low shot from the center of the box, set up by Goncalo Ramos. Denmark answered quickly: in the 22nd, Mikkel Damsgaard leveled with a shot from the left side of the box after a pass from Joakim Maehle. The Danish celebration lasted only two minutes, as Goncalo Ramos restored Portugal's lead in the 24th, finishing with his left foot after a through ball from Bruno Fernandes.
That 1-2 scoreline held until halftime, but the match didn't cool off after the break. Denmark drew level again right at the start of the second half: Rasmus Hojlund, in the 52nd minute, capped off a counterattack with a left-footed shot down the middle, assisted by Damsgaard. The 2-2 seemed to open up an even contest, but Portugal had more in the tank. Vitinha headed in the 2-3 in the 66th off another assist from Bruno Fernandes, and Joao Felix sealed it late with a shot into the top corner in the 86th, following a play from Diogo Dalot, who had come on for Cancelo a few minutes earlier.
A dominance reflected in the numbers
Denmark held more of the ball, but that was about all it controlled. Portugal was clearly superior in terms of real danger, with more shots, more shots on target and, above all, more clear-cut chances.
| Stat | Denmark | Portugal |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 53.7 | 46.3 |
| Shots | 12 | 19 |
| Shots on target | 3 | 10 |
| Big chances | 1 | 6 |
| Corners | 3 | 7 |
| Passes | 527 | 449 |
| Fouls committed | 6 | 12 |
That gap in clear chances also shows up in our own estimate of expected goals generated during the match: Portugal finished with an xG of 3.08 compared to Denmark's 0.87, a gap that explains why the home side never managed to control the rhythm of the game despite seeing more of the ball.
The result also stands in contrast to our pre-match projections. Beforehand, we gave the visitors a 47% chance of winning, a 31% chance of a draw, and a 22% chance of a home win, with a total expected goals figure of 2.21. Portugal lived up to its favorite status, but the match ended with six total goals, well above that projection, and with a Denmark side that scored twice despite being the clear underdog in the forecast.
What it means for the group table
In the Group A4 standings, Portugal arrived at this match already on top and confirmed it: the team now has 9 points from 3 matches played, with 3 wins and no defeats. Denmark, meanwhile, sits in second place with 3 points from the same number of matches, the product of 1 win and 2 defeats. The gap between the two sides in the table now stands at 6 points, a distance that this result only reinforced.
Among the standout performers was Bruno Fernandes, who didn't score but proved decisive with two assists on Portugal's goals, and Goncalo Ramos, who scored once and played a part in the buildup to the opener. For Denmark, Damsgaard was the home side's sharpest player, contributing a goal and an assist within just 22 minutes of each other. Parken was left with a back-and-forth match that, by the final numbers, clearly tilted in the visitors' favor.
