Portuguese federation opens disciplinary case against Cristiano Ronaldo for leaving national team camp

A slammed door, a public apology and now a disciplinary case. What started as a locker room dispute between Cristiano Ronaldo and head coach Jorge Jesus has turned into a formal problem for the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), which decided to provisionally suspend its captain after he left the national team's training camp ahead of the UEFA Nations League match against Denmark.

So what exactly happened? Ronaldo, 41, walked out on the squad following a confrontation with Jesus. The forward accused the coach of failing to keep his promises about playing time, a tension that boiled over after he was left on the bench in the match against Norway. The fallout came quickly: he left before Portugal even faced the Danes.

With the controversy already in full swing, Ronaldo softened his tone and apologized to his teammates and the fans. He admitted he should not have left the camp and, notably, was the one who asked the federation to sanction him for what happened.

The FPF wasted no time taking action. On Saturday it confirmed the opening of a disciplinary case and referred it to its Disciplinary Investigation Committee. The federation's statement was blunt:

Disciplinary proceedings have been opened against Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro, following a decision by the Non Professional Section made on October 9, 2026.Portuguese Football Federation

According to the FPF, Ronaldo was first placed under an automatic provisional suspension, which was later followed by an additional suspension. The federation described the case as "urgent," though no final sanction has been handed down yet: details of the proceedings will remain confidential until the investigation concludes.

Ronaldo ready to accept the punishment

Before the case became official, the player himself had already made his position clear. Earlier this week he said he would accept whatever punishment was imposed on him and stressed that he still intends to keep playing for Portugal. At least in his own words, there is no sign of a break with the national team.

While the federation works through the case, Ronaldo has kept himself busy with his club. He returned to action on Friday, following the contentious international break, and did so in the best way possible: scoring the opening goal in Al-Nassr's 3-0 win over Al-Diriyah in the Saudi Pro League.

The goal had its own backstory. A shot from outside the box by Kingsley Coman was parried by goalkeeper Waleed Abdullah, and Ronaldo was there to tap it in from close range. That goal was, remarkably, the 980th of his career.

The win also carried weight in the standings: Al-Nassr, the defending champions, pulled level on points with league leaders Al-Qadsiah, trailing only on goal difference after the league's eighth round of matches.
