PSG stuns Barcelona with two goals in five minutes to win 4-2 in Champions League thriller

The Parc des Princes witnessed one of those nights that don't fade quickly. Paris Saint-Germain beat Barcelona 4-2 in a match that had it all: early goals, a comeback, a late swing and a final 15 minute stretch that settled the story. Three points in the Champions League league phase were on the line, and PSG claimed them after a second half that started uphill and ended with a display of finishing power.

The home side went ahead in the 37th minute with a stunning goal from Desire Doue, who met a headed flick from Joao Neves and curled a right-footed strike from outside the box that found the bottom corner, right by the post. There had been warning signs before that: Kvaratskhelia had rattled the post just minutes earlier, and PSG controlled much of the opening 45 minutes with constant attacking threat, though Barcelona also had its moments through Pedri, Raphinha and Fermin Lopez buzzing around Chevalier's box.

In the second half, Barcelona leveled things quickly. Xavi Espart equalized in the 54th minute with a crossed finish after a through ball from Fermin Lopez, and the match opened up. PSG went back in front in the 71st minute with a header from Lucas Hernandez off a Doue corner delivery, and it looked like the match was heading toward a PSG win, but Lamine Yamal popped up in the 78th minute with an angled left-footed strike that curled into the top corner to make it 2-2.

That's when the match blew wide open. Just two minutes after the equalizer, in the 80th minute, Vitinha surprised everyone with a strike from outside the box that snuck in along the right side of the goal to make it 3-2. Then in the 85th minute, Fabian Ruiz, set up by Achraf Hakimi, finished coolly with his left foot from close range to seal the final 4-2. In five minutes, Barcelona went from having tied the match to watching it slip away for good.

What the numbers say

Barcelona controlled more possession and touched the ball more, but PSG was far more clinical in front of goal.

The shots on target number tells much of the story of the night: PSG fired 15 shots on frame compared to just 5 from Barcelona, a massive gap that ended up showing on the scoreboard. According to our xG estimate calculated from the match's shots, PSG generated 3.59 expected goals against 2.88 for Barcelona, a figure that backs up the idea that the home side was more effective in genuinely dangerous situations, though the final result, 4-2, even outpaced what those numbers suggested.

Before the match, our projection gave PSG a 39% chance of winning, 24% for a draw and 37% for Barcelona, with expected goals of 1.90 for the home side and 1.84 for the visitors, a combined total of 3.74. The match ended with six total goals, above that forecast, and the result clearly favored the team the preview had seen as only slightly ahead.

What it means in the standings

With this result, PSG moved to 9 points through 3 matches played, with a perfect record of wins and a goal difference of plus 9, sitting atop the overall standings alongside Liverpool, also on 9 points. Barcelona, with the loss, stayed at 6 points after 3 matches (two wins and one loss), now 3 points behind PSG in this head to head comparison.

Among the night's substitutions, PSG had to shuffle its lineup due to injury: Ferran Torres came on for Ousmane Dembele in the first half, and later Illia Zabarnyi and Maghnes Akliouche replaced Marquinhos and Kvaratskhelia, also due to physical issues. Barcelona, for its part, brought on Fermin Lopez for an injured Dani Olmo before making its usual second half substitutions. None of those changes stopped the match from being decided in that final five minute stretch, when PSG, having just been pegged back, found two goals that tipped the night firmly in its favor.
