PSG Chases a Third Straight Champions League Title, Eyeing Real Madrid's Exclusive Club
Luis Enrique says the club that won it all in 2025 and 2026 now faces "a unique challenge": matching what only Real Madrid managed between 2016 and 2018.

Not so long ago, winning the Champions League sounded like a pipe dream at the Parc des Princes. Today, the conversation in Paris has shifted entirely: can PSG string together a third straight title and join one of the most exclusive clubs in the sport? Luis Enrique's side already lifted the trophy in 2025 and did it again in 2026 against Arsenal, and that same core, largely unchanged, is now chasing a goal that almost nobody dared mention in the same breath as PSG until recently.
The Asturian coach isn't shying away from the challenge. He put it plainly: "We have a unique challenge, something practically unheard of in the history of European soccer." And he's right: only Real Madrid, with its three titles between 2016 and 2018, can claim anything like it in the modern era. If PSG wins a third Champions League in a row, they'll be sitting at that same table.
The confidence isn't coming out of nowhere. Just days ago, the Paris side added another trophy to the cabinet with a 2-1 win over Aston Villa in the UEFA Super Cup. Marquinhos, the captain and symbol of this transformation, summed it up after the match with a line that explains pretty well why this PSG is different from the era of individual stars:
All the players are connected and that's very important, because to win big things you need everyone united.Marquinhos
An Identity That Outlasted Mbappé, Messi and Neymar
That may be the key to all of this. This PSG left behind the era of stacking big names without ever finding a collective idea. Luis Enrique brought possession, pressing and a structure that spreads out responsibility instead of leaning on a single genius. The coach defines it with a line that sounds like a manifesto: "We are the evolution of soccer." And he doesn't hold back when talking about how they operate behind the scenes, with data and artificial intelligence in the mix to keep sharpening the squad's level. But he's also honest about how hard it is to sustain this over time: "It's difficult to keep winning," he admitted, though he quickly clarified what drives him: "I have a constant obsession with trying to improve."
The transfer market didn't stay quiet either. In came Ferran Torres, Maghnes Akliouche, Mika Godts, Lucas Digne and goalkeeper Alessandro Longoni. Ferran's case has a story behind it: Luis Enrique already knew him from the Spanish national team and was key in convincing him to join. The forward didn't take long to justify the move: in the league debut against Rennes, with PSG down 2-0, he came on in the second half and scored both goals in the 2-2 final. His explanation for choosing Paris was direct: he called the club "the ideal place to win the Champions League" and named Luis Enrique as one of the main reasons behind his decision.
Real Madrid, the Standard to Beat
The squad keeps the bulk of its title-winning core: Vitinha, João Neves, Warren Zaïre-Emery, Désiré Doué, Ousmane Dembélé, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Nuno Mendes, Achraf Hakimi, Marquinhos and Willian Pacho, among others. Youth with plenty of European mileage already, something that matters a great deal when continental spring arrives and the knockout rounds turn rough.
Still, recent results call for some caution. The team lost the French Super Cup to Lens and opened its Ligue 1 campaign with that nail-biting draw against Rennes after falling behind by two goals. On the domestic front, PSG remains the team to beat after five straight Ligue 1 titles, but the real test lies in Europe, where the margin for error shrinks to almost nothing.
The draw for the 2026/27 Champions League league phase will take place on August 27, with the competition kicking off in September and a long road ahead before the final in Madrid. Luis Enrique has already warned that opponents will be especially fired up against the two-time defending champions: "We need to be alert to opponents trying to provoke us," he said ahead of the clash with Rennes.
Real Madrid knows better than anyone the line between a great run and a dynasty. PSG has already covered two thirds of that path and now wants to complete the journey. Luis Enrique is clear about it and doesn't hide his ambition: "We set ourselves ambitious goals and we keep doing it." He capped the thought with a line that sums up the whole challenge of the season:
It's hard to find a team that wins all the time, but that's what we're after.Luis Enrique
