Puebla Stuns Pachuca 3-2 at Estadio Hidalgo with Stoppage-Time Winner

Puebla Stuns Pachuca 3-2 at Estadio Hidalgo with Stoppage-Time Winner

Puebla pulled off a stunner at Estadio Hidalgo, walking away with a dramatic 3-2 win over Pachuca in a Liga MX clash that wasn't decided until stoppage time. Facundo Almada popped up in the 92nd minute to net the winning goal, just seconds after Pachuca had leveled the score from the penalty spot.

A wild first half

Puebla struck first right out of the gate. In the 15th minute, Emiliano Gomez curled a right-footed finish from the middle of the box to make it 0-1, capping off an assist from Eduardo Mustre. The visitors doubled their lead not long after: a VAR review flagged a handball by Kenedy inside the area, and in the 32nd minute, Kevin Velasco converted the resulting penalty to make it 0-2.

Pachuca, who controlled possession but couldn't find a way through, pulled one back right before halftime. In the 41st minute, Salomon Rondon headed home a cross from Carlos Sanchez to make it 1-2, sending the home side into the locker room with hope still alive. The half ended with a Brayan Garnica shot that clanged off the crossbar, a warning sign that the match was far from settled.

The comeback that wasn't

Pachuca kept pushing in the second half and it paid off: in the 59th minute the referee pointed to the spot again, this time for a handball by Sergio Sanabria, and Rondon made no mistake, netting his second of the night to make it 2-2 in the 62nd minute. The home side looked poised to complete the comeback, but Puebla weathered the late storm and, deep into stoppage time, Facundo Almada tapped in from close range off a corner kick delivered by Luifer Hernandez to seal the final 2-3 scoreline in the 92nd minute.

By the numbers

Pachuca controlled the ball for longer stretches and generated more offensive volume, but lacked the finishing touch when it mattered most.

The post-match expected goals numbers reflect just how even the game was despite the final result: 2.691 for Pachuca versus 2.309 for Puebla, a razor-thin margin that confirms the home side created enough danger to have earned a better outcome, but that the visitors were sharper when it counted.

What the preview said

Before kickoff, our projection gave Pachuca a 38% chance of winning, compared to 29% for Puebla and 33% for a draw, with an expected 1.17 goals for the home side and 1 for the visitors. The result flew in the face of that forecast: not only did the team with the lower odds come out on top, but the five-goal final tally blew well past the expected total of 2.17, making for a far more open game than anticipated.

What the result means

For Puebla, the win comes in a tournament where the club now sits on seven points, with a record of two wins, a draw and a loss through four matches. Pachuca, on the other hand, remains lost: the fresh defeat leaves them with just three points from four outings, the product of a single win and three losses, a four-point gap behind tonight's opponent. The match made clear that scoring chances aren't Pachuca's problem, holding onto a lead is, and it's an issue they'll need to fix if they hope to climb the table in the coming weeks.
