Pumas go up 3-1 with a man down but Cruz Azul storm back to 3-3 at the Olímpico

Down to ten men for nearly an hour, Pumas watched a two-goal lead slip away against a Cruz Azul side that dominated possession and leveled 3-3 in stoppage time in Liga MX.

Pumas go up 3-1 with a man down but Cruz Azul storm back to 3-3 at the Olímpico

Pumas UNAM jumped out to a 2-0 lead in just fifteen minutes, played more than an hour with ten men, and still ended up conceding a 3-3 draw to Cruz Azul at Estadio Olímpico Universitario, in a Liga MX match that had everything: a blistering start, a red card that flipped the game plan, and a Cruz Azul machine that clawed back the deficit to tie it in the closing minutes.

The home side came out with the throttle wide open. In the 9th minute, Juninho finished with his left foot from inside the box after a counterattack set up by César Huerta, and the 1-0 arrived almost before Cruz Azul had touched the ball. Six minutes later, Huerta returned the favor to Juninho: a left-footed strike into the top corner made it 2-0 and had the Olímpico in full celebration. Pumas led on the scoreboard, if not in possession, and a rout looked to be forming.

But the 36th minute brought the moment that changed everything: Huerta picked up a second yellow card for a dangerous play and Pumas were reduced to ten men for the remaining 55 minutes or so. Cruz Azul, who had already been pushing with more of the ball and more shots, found their opening right at the start of the second half: Agustín Palavecino pulled one back in the 47th minute with a header off a Jorge Rodarte assist. The scoreboard read 2-1, but it lasted barely a minute: in the 48th, Robert Morales finished with his right foot on another counterattack to restore the two-goal cushion, 3-1, just as the second half was getting underway.

From there on, it was all Cruz Azul. With a man advantage, the visitors camped in Pumas territory and began hammering away at the home goal again and again. Andrés Montaño, who had come on at halftime, cut the deficit in the 63rd minute with a left-footed shot down the middle to make it 3-2. The pressure never let up: before that goal, Montaño had rattled the post with a header and Nicolás Ibáñez had done the same off the crossbar, so the equalizer felt like only a matter of time. It arrived in the 84th minute: Christian Ebere, on from the bench, finished from close range with his right foot off an assist from Ibáñez to make it a final 3-3.

The numbers behind a lopsided match

The final score was even, but the control of the game was anything but. Cruz Azul held 68.3% of possession to Pumas' 31.7%, and the gap in chance creation was even wider.

Thirty shots for Cruz Azul against nine for Pumas tell the story of this match just as clearly as the final score. The estimated xG calculated from the shots taken backs that up: 2.662 for Cruz Azul compared with just 1.044 for Pumas, a gap that reflects how little of the ball the home side saw once they went down to ten men, surviving until the 84th minute largely on the back of sharp counterattacking.

Beforehand, our projection gave Cruz Azul a 40% chance of winning, 33% for Pumas and 27% for a draw, with combined expected goals of 2.95. The final result, with six goals between the two sides, topped that figure, and the draw ended up being, of the three outcomes, the one the model liked least before kickoff.

What the result means

In the standings, Cruz Azul move to 17 points from 11 matches played, with a record of 5 wins, 2 draws and 4 losses, holding their spot in the upper-middle of the table. Pumas UNAM, with 13 points from 11 outings (3 wins, 4 draws and 4 losses), sit 4 points back. For the home side, splitting the points feels like a missed opportunity after having the game under control at 3-1 with a man disadvantage for the opponent; for Cruz Azul, the comeback against ten men leaves the sense that the draw was, in the end, a fair reward for their persistence.
