Pumas UNAM Rout León 3-1 with Decisive Comeback in Final Twenty Minutes

Halftime arrived with Pumas UNAM ahead on the scoreboard and León having enjoyed more of the ball but not the goal. In the end, at Estadio Olímpico Universitario, Pumas came away with a 3-1 victory built on a spirited comeback that took shape in the final twenty minutes, after León had equalized right at the start of the second half.

The first half was back and forth with no reward until stoppage time. Ismael Díaz and Jordi Cortizo had tested Keylor Navas, and Pumas also created chances through Uriel Antuna and Víctor Arteaga, but neither side could find the net. Everything changed in the 44th minute: on a corner kick, Rodrigo López delivered the cross and Juninho rose through the middle of the box to head it into the top corner, sending the home side into the break with a slim 1-0 lead.

León wasted no time responding at the start of the second half. Just 52 minutes in, Alfonso Alvarado leveled the score with a right-footed strike from the center of the box, also finding the top corner, making it 1-1. The goal seemed to give the visitors momentum, and they nearly grabbed a second when Díber Cambindo's shot struck the left post in the 67th minute.

But that was exactly the moment the match tilted back in Pumas' favor. Two minutes after that post, in the 69th minute, Robert Morales also scored with his head, this time off a cross from Luciano Herrera, to make it 2-1 and restore the home side's lead. The psychological blow proved decisive: León never found an answer, and Pumas, with substitutes Israel Luna, Adalberto Carrasquilla, Jesús Rivas and Alan Medina freshening up the lineup, controlled the closing minutes.

The third goal came late, in the 86th minute, on another set piece: a corner kick, Alan Medina with the assist, and Pedro Vite finishing with his left foot from outside the box, low and tight to the post, to seal the final 3-1.

León dominated possession and outpassed Pumas (487 passes to 351), but it was Pumas who controlled the penalty areas: more shots, more shots on target and, above all, far more danger from the flanks with eight corners compared to just two for León, a direct reflection of the fact that two of the home side's three goals came from set pieces.

As for our own expected goals estimate calculated from the match's shots, Pumas generated 1.51 xG compared to León's 0.84 xG, a gap that confirms that despite having less of the ball, the university side was sharper in creating clear-cut chances.
