Racing comes from behind to beat Espanyol 2-1 at El Sardinero in the final stretch
Belocian and Zabiri turned around Edu Exposito's early strike as Racing pulled off a 2-1 win despite stiff resistance from Espanyol.

Espanyol went ahead at El Sardinero and for a few minutes it looked like the visitors might walk away from Cantabria with all three points. But Racing de Santander hit back almost immediately and, in the closing stretch, flipped the scoreline to win 2-1. It was a match the home side dominated in terms of overall play, even though the result was settled in barely twenty minutes of attacking fury.
The first half was a one-way parade of Racing chances that went unrewarded. Sergio Canales, Jorge Salinas, Yassir Zabiri and Inigo Vicente all tested the visiting goalkeeper in various moves, but the score stayed level. In the 38th minute there was a warning sign for Espanyol: VAR reviewed a possible penalty and ruled there was no foul. The scoreless deadlock held until halftime even though Racing had already made clear there was plenty more to come.
The visitors' blow and the immediate response
The second half opened with a gut punch for the home crowd. In the 61st minute, Edu Exposito put Espanyol ahead with a low right-footed finish from the center of the box that found the left side of the net, set up by Javi Hernandez. The goal came at almost the worst possible moment for Racing, which just a minute earlier had seen a shot of its own cleared off the crossbar area.
But the response was immediate. Just seven minutes later, in the 68th, Jeanuel Belocian leveled the match with a left-footed strike from outside the box that slipped in on the right side of the goal, assisted by Sergio Canales. The equalizer reflected exactly what the match had been up to that point: a Racing side creating far more than its opponent.
The decisive blow came in the 83rd minute. Following a corner kick, Yassir Zabiri finished with his left foot from close range, down the middle of the goal, assisted by Alvaro Mantilla, to make it a final 2-1. Espanyol still had a couple of attempts in stoppage time, which ran six minutes, but could not avoid defeat.
Total dominance in the numbers
The match statistics confirm what was visible on the field: a far superior Racing side in terms of ball control and chance creation.
| Statistic | Racing de Santander | Espanyol |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 54.9 | 45.1 |
| Shots | 23 | 11 |
| Shots on target | 9 | 1 |
| Big chances | 3 | - |
| Corners | 9 | 4 |
| Passes | 480 | 378 |
| Fouls committed | 10 | 17 |
That dominance also shows up in the expected goals figures calculated after the fact from the match's shots: 2.91 for Racing against just 0.56 for Espanyol. These numbers measure what was generated during the game rather than a pregame forecast, but they make clear the home side deserved far more than the scoreline suggested before the two late goals.
That superiority stands in contrast to our pregame projection: our model gave a 41% probability to an away win, 33% to Racing and 26% to a draw, with expected goals of 1.50 for the home side and 1.67 for the visitors. The result ended up looking quite different from that forecast: not only did the less-favored team win, it did so with a gap in shots and chances that Espanyol was never able to counter.
What it means in the standings
In the LaLiga table, this result puts Racing de Santander in 11th place with 11 points from 10 matches played (three wins, two draws and five losses), while Espanyol remains in 18th, also with 10 matches played, two wins, two draws and six losses, for 8 points. The gap between the two sides in the standings is just 3 points, something the match itself reflected: it was a far more even contest in the fight for points than what the scoreline suggested through the first 60 minutes.
For Racing, the win comes after a match in which they kept pressing again and again despite finding no reward until the second half. For Espanyol, there's the lingering feeling of having come close to a result that the match statistics never quite backed up.
