Racing rout Sarmiento 3-1, turning the table upside down at the Cilindro

Despite sitting last in Group B, Racing dominated and beat a Sarmiento side that stood second, with braces from Ignacio Rodriguez and Adrian Martinez.

Racing rout Sarmiento 3-1, turning the table upside down at the Cilindro

Racing Club shook off a long-standing frustration at the Cilindro de Avellaneda, routing Sarmiento 3-1 in a match that had a bit of everything: an even opening, a lightning-fast equalizer, and a second half in which the home side ultimately overwhelmed its visitor with sheer footballing weight. The result also leaves behind a striking detail: in Argentina's Primera Division, Racing had been sitting dead last in Group B with just 8 points from 10 matches, while Sarmiento was sitting second with 16. On the field, though, the gap ran the other way entirely.

The match opened with Racing taking the initiative, and it didn't take long to pay off. In the 22nd minute, Gonzalo Escudero fired a left-footed strike from outside the box that flew into the top corner off an assist from Ulises Ortegoza. Sarmiento's response was immediate: just three minutes later, in the 25th, Junior Marabel rose to head home the equalizer off a cross from Julian Contrera, leveling things at 1-1 before the half-hour mark had even arrived.

With the score tied, Racing kept creating chances but couldn't find a way through again: Ignacio Rodriguez and Leonel Perez both had looks before the break, but the first half ended 1-1. The story changed in the second half. Barely a minute into the restart, in the 51st minute, Adrian Martinez headed home a cross from Ortegoza to make it 2-1 and hand the advantage back to Vojvoda's side. Racing controlled the pace of the game from there, with Sarmiento trying to answer down the flanks without much clarity, until Ignacio Rodriguez, in the 79th minute, finished with his left foot from outside the area to seal the final 3-1.

The numbers behind the result

The stats confirm what was visible on the pitch: Racing was clearly superior both in control of the match and in creating danger.

According to our post-match xG estimate based on the shots taken in the game, Racing generated 2.077 expected goals to Sarmiento's 0.685, a gap that backs up the superiority reflected on the scoreboard and lines up with the territorial dominance the home side held for much of the 90 minutes.

What the preview said

Before kickoff, our projection gave Racing a 55% chance of winning, against a 28% chance of a draw and a 17% chance of an away win, with expected goals split at 1.61 for the home side and 0.80 for Sarmiento. The result ended up matching that forecast closely: Racing won and even topped the goal total we projected, in a match that bore out the favoritism we had assigned it despite its place in the standings.

The context in Group B

The win doesn't dramatically change Racing's reality in the standings: it came into the matchday in 12th place in Group B with 8 points from 10 games (2 wins, 2 draws and 6 losses), while Sarmiento sat second with 16 points from 10 outings (5 wins, 1 draw and 4 losses), an 8-point gap between the two sides heading into this clash. That contrast between the table and what Racing showed on the field is probably the most interesting takeaway from the afternoon in Avellaneda.

With this result, Racing banks a boost it badly needed to show in its performance, regardless of what the accumulated points say so far. For Sarmiento, on the other hand, the trip to the Cilindro snaps a positive run that had it sitting comfortably near the top of Group B.
