Racing and Independiente Battle for Derby Pride at the Presidente Perón
On Sunday, October 18, in matchday 13 of the 2026 Clausura, Racing looks for revenge after falling at home to Independiente back in April.
Another Avellaneda derby arrives at a moment that's far from ideal for either side. Racing and Independiente face off on Sunday, October 18 at the Estadio Presidente Perón, for matchday 13 of the 2026 Clausura Tournament, and this time derby pride counts for more than the standings: both clubs arrive bruised and in need of a win to lift their spirits heading into the final stretch of the year.
The broadcast will air on ESPN Premium in Argentina, while the rest of the region can catch it on Disney+. Kickoff is set for 2:45 p.m. (Argentina, Chile and Uruguay time) and 12:45 p.m. for Colombia, Peru and Ecuador.
Two Teams in Need of a Statement Win
Racing isn't going through a good spell on the field. Sebastián Romero's side has managed just two wins in its last eight matches, a rough stretch that includes six losses, the most recent of which was a 0-2 home defeat to Belgrano. To make matters worse, the Academia already knows it's been mathematically eliminated from international qualification via the annual table, a fact that strips some urgency from the standings but adds extra weight to derby pride.
Independiente isn't exactly overflowing with good news either. Jackson Viera's team has suffered just one loss in its last five matches, with the most recent being a largely uneventful 0-0 draw against Talleres. There's one stat, though, that the Diablos Rojos are eager to protect: they're the team that has earned the most points on the road so far this tournament, a mark they'll look to defend in precisely the toughest place to do it: the rival's own stadium.
Names to Watch
At Racing, beyond the results, there are players who can tip the scales: Adrián Martínez, Leonel Pérez, Mateo Martínez and Lautaro Díaz are the pieces the Academia will lean on to unlock what promises to be a tightly contested match.
On the other side, Independiente is trusting its usual core: Santiago Montiel, Maximiliano Meza, Juan Miguel Arrayago and Mateo Pérez Curci are the names that keep Viera's side running.
The Most Recent Meeting
The last time these two squared off, on April 4, 2026, Independiente came away with a narrow home win, courtesy of a goal from Gabriel Ávalos. That result has stuck in the derby's recent memory and is, in a way, unfinished business that Racing will be eager to settle on its own turf.
With an Academia that no longer has anything to play for in the standings but still has derby pride on the line, and a Rojo side looking to keep up its strong away form, the Presidente Perón will host a match that, numbers aside, could shape how both clubs close out the year.
