Racing beats Boston River 3-2 in stoppage time to take the lead

With the clock working against them and everything pointing toward a draw that would have left nobody fully satisfied, a penalty call arrived, and so did Tomás Habib to convert it. That finish, in the closing minutes, gave Racing a dramatic 3-2 victory over Boston River at Parque Roberto, in matchday six of the 2026 Torneo Clausura of the Uruguayan AUF League.

The match had a bit of everything, including two penalties that opened and closed the scoring. The first went Racing's way in the 21st minute, and Sebastián Da Silva made no mistake from the spot to make it 1-0. Boston River, refusing to back down, found the equalizer through the same method near the end of the first half: in the 46th minute, Rodrigo Saravia made it 1-1, sending the teams to the break level.

In the second half, Racing went back in front with a goal from inside the box by Facundo Aristegui in the 72nd minute, a strike that seemed to be putting the result in the home side's favor. But Boston River had other plans and didn't let up: just five minutes later, Esteban Da Silva fired a shot from distance that found the net for 2-2, leaving everything open again as the match wound down.

With a draw looking like the most likely outcome, Racing earned another penalty in the final stretch. This time it was Tomás Habib who stepped up to take it, and he didn't miss, sealing the final 3-2 for the home side on an afternoon decided by the smallest of margins, with nerves on edge right up to the final whistle.

A win worth the top spot

The result puts Racing, at least provisionally, at the top of the Tabla Anual with 52 points. The cushion over Deportivo Maldonado and Peñarol stands at three points, though the schedule is worth watching closely: Maldonado play this Sunday and could cut into the gap, while Peñarol still have two games in hand to play.

Buoyed by the result, Racing heads into the next round with confidence, when they travel to face Liverpool. Boston River, meanwhile, will look to bounce back at home against Progreso, with the feeling that the point that slipped away in stoppage time could have been theirs.
