Racing and Banfield collide in Zona B with both sides desperate for a win
Both teams arrive winless and in need of a reaction in matchday five of the competition.
Three matches without a win and a serious injury to boot. That's how Racing arrives at Friday's game, needing badly to snap a run of form that is starting to take its toll. Standing in the way is Banfield, which isn't going through its best moment either and needs points with almost the same urgency. Estadio Presidente Peron will host a matchup between two teams level in the standings and carrying more doubts than certainties.
The game corresponds to matchday five of Zona B in the Torneo Clausura 2026 and will be played on Friday, August 14, starting at 8:30 p.m. (Argentina and Uruguay time), 7:30 p.m. in Chile and 6:30 p.m. for Colombia, Peru and Ecuador. The broadcast will be handled by ESPN Premium.
How both teams arrive
Racing can't seem to turn things around. Since falling 2-1 to Argentinos Juniors, Juan Pablo Vojvoda's side has gone three games without a win, a stretch that also left scars: the serious injury to Marco Di Cesare and the red card shown to Adrian Martinez in that match are still being felt in the squad. Right now the Academia sits far from the spots that grant access to international cups, an unusual position given the club's usual expectations.
Banfield, meanwhile, is navigating problems that go beyond the pitch: debts, transfer bans and limited ability to bring in reinforcements are complicating life for Pedro Troglio. On top of that, the club is missing promising midfielder Tiziano Perrotta, another sensitive absence for a thin squad. In the league, the Taladro is coming off a 2-0 home loss to Belgrano, a setback that only deepens the need for a quick response.
Names to watch closely
In Avellaneda, all eyes are on Matias Kranevitter, Alejandro Tello, Matko Miljevic and Lautaro Diaz, tasked with trying to restore the kind of form Racing showed in other stretches of the tournament. On Banfield's side, with hopes pinned on the debut of its reinforcements following the transfer bans, Bruno Sepulveda, Ignacio Abraham, Santiago Esquivel and Lautaro Gomez stand out as the main names looking to turn things around.
The most recent meeting between the two sides favors the Academia: on February 14, 2026, Racing won 2-0 on the road, with goals from Di Cesare and Maravilla Martinez. That result feels distant now, both in time and in context, since neither team is currently showing the solidity of that moment. With both sides level on points and sharing the same need to snap their bad runs, Friday's match at the Cilindro promises to be a demanding test for two squads searching, above all, to rebuild confidence.
