Raphinha Is Chasing the Golden Boot, and Only an Unknown Latvian Stands in His Way

Twelve goals in seven games. Two hat tricks in the span of just four days. If you had told anyone a year ago that Raphinha would end up playing center forward for Barcelona, they probably would have laughed. Yet here we are: he's occupying the spot left vacant by Robert Lewandowski after his move to the MLS with Chicago Fire, and he's turned into one of the most feared strikers in Europe at the start of the 2026-27 season.

The Brazilian, Barcelona's captain, shifted from the wing to the middle of the attack, and the switch has suited him perfectly. So well, in fact, that he's now going toe to toe in the race for the European Golden Boot, the award given to the continent's top scorer each season. And that's not all: during this first international break, Raphinha's numbers already surpass those of names like Erling Haaland (five goals in five games), Kylian Mbappe (seven in seven), and even reigning winner Harry Kane, who has three goals in four appearances this season.

Who's Leading the Standings

But someone is ahead of him. His name is Joseph Ede Oloko, and he's likely a total unknown, which makes sense: he plays in the Virsliga, Latvia's top division, splitting this season between Tukums 2000 (on loan) and his parent club, FK Liepaja. The 25-year-old forward has racked up an eye-popping 25 goals in 27 league matches, with five rounds still to go before the Latvian championship wraps up in early November. His scoring streak has also earned him his first call-up to Benin's national team, with whom he'll play Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Burkina Faso and Mauritania before closing out the break with a trip to Buenos Aires for what will serve as Lionel Messi's farewell match with the Argentina national team.

Here's the thing: even though Oloko has twice as many goals as Raphinha, the gap between them in the Golden Boot standings is just one point. Why? Because the award isn't decided by raw goal totals, but by a coefficient system.

How the Points System Works

UEFA applies a multiplier based on how competitive each league is. Goals scored in one of the "big five" leagues (Spain, England, Italy, Germany and France) count double. Goals scored in leagues ranked 6th through 22nd in the UEFA rankings are multiplied by 1.5, and everything else counts at a rate of 1. That's how Kane won the award last season with his 36 goals in the Bundesliga for Bayern Munich, which translated into 72 points.

Under that formula, Raphinha's 12 goals in LaLiga become 24 points. The next representatives from the top leagues, Mbappe and Lamine Yamal, are tied for 21st with seven goals (14 points) apiece. Oloko, meanwhile, playing in a low-coefficient league, sees his 25 goals multiplied by just 1, leaving him with 25 points and the lead, just one ahead of the Barca captain.

The rest of the top 10 is filled mostly with players from Scandinavia's so-called "summer leagues," which start their seasons in March and wrap up in November to avoid the harsh winter weather. That's where you'll find names like Kristian Stromland Lien (Djurgarden, 16 goals/24 points), Robbie Ure (IK Sirius/Sevilla, 15 goals/22.5 points), Paulos Abraham (Hammarby, 14 goals/21 points) and Mohamed Badamosi (Riga FC, 20 goals/20 points), among others. All of them have already played most of their schedule, while players in the Premier League, LaLiga, Serie A, the Bundesliga and Ligue 1 are just getting their seasons underway.

That scheduling gap works against Raphinha for now, but if he keeps up the scoring pace he's shown at Barcelona, it won't take long to see him climb to the top of the standings, possibly even before his northern European rivals hang up their boots for the winter.
