Raphinha Scores 14 Goals on 18 Shots on Target, Tops Europe's Big Leagues Ahead of Mbappe and Haaland
The Brazilian is converting almost everything he fires on target and is outscoring his xG by 4.4 goals, while Mbappe and Dembele are falling short of expectations.

There's one stat that sums up what's happening with Raphinha this season better than anything else: of every 18 shots on target, 14 have ended up in the net. Put that way, it sounds almost like easy mode on a video game. But it's real, and it's the reason why, without being a traditional center forward, the Brazilian has become the top scorer across Europe's major leagues, ahead of names like Mbappe, Haaland, Kane and Dembele.
Context matters here. Raphinha took on the number 9 role at Barcelona to fill the gap left by the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres, and he's done it with a finishing touch nobody saw coming. 14 goals in 8 games, off 18 shots on target, are numbers that even outpace statistical logic: his xG (the goals he "should" have scored based on the quality of his chances) sits at 9.6, meaning he's scoring 4.4 goals more than expected. That, in fact, was the stat that set off alarm bells at the Catalan club when the Brazilian had to come off with discomfort during Brazil's 4-2 friendly win over Australia on September 29. Tests afterward ruled out injury, but Hansi Flick has already said he'll manage Raphinha's workload with a demanding October ahead, featuring Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid on the schedule.
The Flip Side: Mbappe
If Raphinha is efficiency personified, Mbappe is almost his mirror image. The Frenchman has 8 goals, a number that falls short of his own xG of 8.7. How does that happen? He shoots constantly (45 attempts, 26 on target), but only converts 3 out of every 10 shots he puts on frame. There's another telling number too: no forward in this analysis has missed as many clear chances as he has, 11 in total. The picture is clear: while Mbappe needs to keep firing away to find the net, Raphinha gets the job done with far less.
Haaland, Kane and Dembele, Each in Their Own Way
Haaland and Kane, who finished last season as the top scorers in the Bundesliga and Premier League respectively, are also off to strong starts, and like Raphinha, both are outperforming their underlying numbers. The Norwegian has 7 goals with an xG of 6.2, and already sits atop the Premier League scoring charts. Kane has 6 goals with an xG of just 4.8, though only 30.3% of his shots are finding the target, the lowest rate alongside Dembele's. Still, when he does hit the target, it's almost always a goal: 6 goals from 10 shots on frame.
Dembele's case is different. The reigning Ballon d'Or winner and two-time Champions League champion has just 2 goals despite taking more shots than his former teammate Raphinha (33 to 28). With only 27% of his shots on target, his output is falling short of expectations: his 2 goals are less than half his xG of 4.5, and he's squandered 8 clear chances, the same number as Haaland and three fewer than Mbappe.
Taken together, Raphinha's start to the season stands out not just for the volume of goals, but for the manner in which he's scoring them: few shots, maximum conversion, and a positive gap over his xG that no other forward in Europe's top leagues is matching.
