RB Leipzig thrashes Hamburger SV 5-0 with three goals in 20 minutes

The home side put the game away in the second half as Hamburger SV remains without a point this season.

RB Leipzig thrashes Hamburger SV 5-0 with three goals in 20 minutes

Five goals, three of them in just 20 minutes of the second half, and a Hamburger SV side that left the Red Bull Arena without a single point to show for it. RB Leipzig settled the match 5-0, putting up round numbers against an opponent that has long since run out of answers: still no wins, no draws, through the early going of the season.

The Bundesliga matchup opened with Leipzig taking control almost immediately. In the 16th minute came the opener: Tidiam Gomis connected on a cross from Ezechiel Banzuzi to put the hosts ahead. Eleven minutes later, Antonio Nusa doubled the lead with a strike from outside the box that curled into the top corner, the kind of goal that shapes everything that follows. The teams went into the break at 2-0, though Hamburger SV had a couple of half chances through Yussuf Poulsen and Nicolai Remberg that didn't find the target.

The game seemed to settle into a holding pattern for much of the second half, until between the 71st and 76th minutes it completely came apart. Willi Orbán tapped in from close range off a set piece worked by Antonio Nusa to make it 3-0. Two minutes later, Christopher Nkunku, who had come on earlier due to Assan Ouédraogo's injury, finished off another Nusa assist for 4-0. And before another three minutes had passed, Rômulo, just off the bench, capped it off with a strike from the right side of the box for 5-0. In the span of a quarter hour, a comfortable lead turned into a rout.

The numbers back up the dominance

Leipzig's control wasn't just about clinical finishing, it showed in possession, in the volume of play and in the chances created. The home side finished with 19 shots to Hamburger SV's 10, and the gap widens further when you look at the post-match expected goals: 2.13 for Leipzig against 0.61 for the visitors, a number that lines up pretty well with what played out on the field.

Corners were the one category where Hamburger SV managed to even things out, tied 7-7. In every other respect, Leipzig's grip on possession and chance creation was overwhelming.

What the result means in the standings

With this win, RB Leipzig moves to 6 points through three matches, with two wins and a loss. Hamburger SV, meanwhile, remains without a point after its first three games, its goal difference taking another hit after this drubbing. The two clubs are separated by 6 points in the table, a gap this match did nothing but confirm on the field.

For Leipzig, the one downside was the injury to Assan Ouédraogo, which forced an early substitution for Christopher Nkunku in the first half, though Nkunku himself ended up among the goal scorers. For Hamburger SV, the afternoon leaves more questions than answers: few clear-cut chances, a defense that couldn't handle the traffic down the home side's right flank, and a goal difference that keeps sinking further with every match.
