Real Madrid hosts Malaga at the Bernabeu with Mbappe in red-hot form
Los Blancos arrive unbeaten with Mbappe at his sharpest, while Los Boquerones have managed just one point through three matchdays.
Malaga hasn't set foot in the Santiago Bernabeu for a top-flight match in more than seven years, and the return comes at a moment when the gap between these two clubs looks wider than ever. On Sunday, August 30, Real Madrid hosts Los Boquerones for matchday 3 of LaLiga 2026/2027, with kickoff set for 12:00 pm in Argentina and Uruguay (11:00 am in Chile, 10:00 am in Colombia, Peru and Ecuador), broadcast live on Disney Plus for South America.
Madrid comes in rolling. The club won its first two league matches and the memory of its last offensive showcase is still fresh, a 4-1 rout built on what was almost a four-goal haul from one man: three goals from Kylian Mbappe and one from Vinicius Junior. With that kind of firepower up front, it's hard to picture a modest side keeping the Whites in check on their own turf.
Malaga, meanwhile, arrives with the urgency of a team that can't afford to relax for a single weekend. It has collected just one point so far this season, and the goal at this stage is purely survival. In its last outing the club drew with Deportivo La Coruna on a goal from Chupete, its main attacking reference and the name to watch whenever the Andalusian side pushes into the opposing box.
The names shaping the matchup
On Madrid's side, the list of names speaks for itself: Mbappe, Vinicius Junior, Federico Valverde, Jude Bellingham and Arda Guler account for much of the club's attacking threat and creativity. With that kind of talent on the field, any opponent knows the smallest lapse can turn into a rout. Malaga, for its part, is banking on collective resistance. Beyond Chupete up front, the team leans on midfielders Pablo Martinez and Izan Merino, and on whatever solidity defender Fernando Calero can provide as he tries to slow down an attack that hasn't been forgiving lately.
The most recent meeting between these two sides also favors Madrid: the last time they met was on April 15, 2018, at La Rosaleda, where Madrid won 2-1 on goals from Isco and Casemiro, with Diego Rolan pulling one back for the home side. More than seven years have passed since then, and the two clubs' paths have diverged sharply: while Madrid kept chasing continental titles, Malaga now competes in far different divisions with far different ambitions.
Is hope and tactical discipline enough to stop a Madrid side that arrived at matchday 3 with a perfect record and this kind of firepower? Recent history, and what unfolded at La Rosaleda seven years ago, suggests Malaga will need more than good intentions to take anything away from the Bernabeu.
