Real Madrid hosts a Sevilla side eager to snap its losing habit against the big clubs

Mourinho rotates with the Champions League in mind while Luis Garcia's side looks to land the blow that has eluded them against top teams.

The Santiago Bernabeu hosts a match this Sunday, October 18, that promises more tension than the standings suggest. Real Madrid and Sevilla meet in matchday nine of LaLiga 2026/2027 starting at 4:00 p.m. (Argentina, Chile and Uruguay time) and 2:00 p.m. (Colombia, Peru and Ecuador time), with coverage through Disney+'s Premium Plan for South America.

Jose Mourinho's team hasn't exactly been dominant in its matches. It wins, yes, but often more through individual talent than a smoothly oiled collective system. And that's where the danger lies: when those individual moments aren't enough, Madrid runs into trouble. Sevilla, even as the visitor to the league's current frontrunner, could be exactly the kind of awkward opponent that complicates the afternoon.

Luis Garcia's Sevilla arrives with a season of decent results, but with one thorn still stuck in its side: the inability to perform against the top teams. This Sunday gives them a chance to break that trend and prove they can go toe to toe with a giant.

Names to watch this Sunday

Madrid played in midweek in the Champions League, so rotation is nearly a given. Names like Arda Guler, Carlos Espi and Alvaro Carreras could get their shot from the opening whistle.

On Sevilla's side, much will depend on the offensive contributions of Robbie Urie and Youssuf Fofana, while defensive duties will fall to Juan Iglesias and Kike Salas, tasked with containing an opponent that tends to cause damage from all angles.

How both teams arrive

Real Madrid is coming off a true roller coaster in Europe, beating Roma 4-3 in the Champions League in midweek. In LaLiga, its calling card is a 1-0 win over Villarreal, a result that brought it to 18 points and fourth place in the table.

Sevilla, meanwhile, arrives with morale dented after a 3-3 draw against Levante. That result left them with 14 points, in fifth place, just behind Madrid itself.

The most recent meeting between the two sides doesn't offer much encouragement for the Andalusians: it came on May 17, 2026, at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, in matchday 37 of LaLiga 2025/2026. That day, Madrid won 1-0 with a goal from Vinicius Junior.

Will the script repeat itself, or will Sevilla manage to rewrite recent history? The Bernabeu has the answer this Sunday.
