Real Salt Lake hosts Western Conference leader Vancouver with pressure to snap losing skid

The team stuck in a recent tailspin hosts the Western Conference leader in a matchup where the numbers favor Vancouver, though not by an overwhelming margin.

Real Salt Lake hosts Western Conference leader Vancouver with pressure to snap losing skid

Four losses in the last five games are hard to hide, and Real Salt Lake enters this MLS matchup carrying that weight. Standing across from them will be the Western Conference leader, a Vancouver Whitecaps FC side that has its own recent doubts but remains, by a clear margin, the team with the better numbers this season between the two. America First Field is set to host a match with more intrigue than the standings alone would suggest.

That gap in the table is considerable: 17 points separate the two sides in the West, where Vancouver sits first with 46 points and Real Salt Lake sits eleventh with 29. In league play, the Utah club has racked up 8 wins, 5 draws and 11 losses in 24 matches, scoring 37 goals and allowing 39. Vancouver, meanwhile, has gone 14-4-6 in its 24 matches, scoring 53 goals and allowing just 23.

Recent form, however, softens the favoritism. Real Salt Lake arrives off a five game stretch with four losses and a draw, without a single win in that span. Vancouver hasn't been at its best either, picking up just one win, one draw and three losses in its last five matches. Two teams needing to snap out of a rut, though starting from very different points in the standings.

Some context is worth reading carefully. Playing at home in MLS this season, across a sample of 12 matches, Real Salt Lake averages 2 goals scored and 1.42 allowed per game, with a 17% clean sheet rate, and tends to do its damage between the 46th and 60th minutes. Sergi Solans, with 9 goals in that sample, is its top offensive threat at home. Vancouver, playing on the road in 10 MLS matches this season, averages 2.112 goals scored and 1.2 allowed, with a 30% clean sheet rate, and tends to score mostly late, between the 76th and 90th minutes. Brian White, with 15 goals in that sample, is its biggest threat, alongside Thomas Müller with 7.

The head to head record between the two is close: in 8 previous meetings, Real Salt Lake won 4, Vancouver won 3 and there was 1 draw, with 12 goals for the home side and 11 for the visitors across that span.

Possible lineups

With the caveat that this is a low confidence estimate based on recent matches, Pablo Mastroeni could go with Rafael Cabral in goal, a back line of Juan José Arias, DeAndre Yedlin and Philip Quinton, a midfield of Noel Caliskan, Alexandros Katranis, Juan Manuel Sanabria and Luca Moisa, and an attacking trio of Sergi Solans, Morgan Guilavogui and Saba Lobjanidze. Jesper Sørensen, for his part, could field Yohei Takaoka in goal, a back four of Tristan Blackmon, Mathías Laborda, Édier Ocampo and Tate Johnson, a midfield of Ryan Gauld, Andrés Cubas, Thomas Müller, Jeevan Badwal and Oliver Larraz, and Brian White as the lone forward.

What the numbers say

Our model sees a match with a slight edge for the visitors, but without either side pulling too far away.

StatisticReal Salt LakeVancouver Whitecaps FC
Win probability28%45%
Draw27%
Expected goals (estimated xG)1.271.63

These figures come from our own model, not betting odds, but they make clear that Vancouver's 45% is far from overwhelming dominance: there's real room for an upset or a draw. On top of that, our model puts the probability of the match going over 2.5 goals at 58% and the probability of both teams scoring at 67%, which lines up with the scoring averages both teams carry in their respective samples.

With the conference leader visiting a team desperate for results near the bottom of the table, America First Field is set for a match that can be read a few different ways: Real Salt Lake looking to snap its slide, and Vancouver trying to keep its footing despite its own recent stumbles.
