Real Salt Lake rout St. Louis City SC 3-0 as Solans brace punishes red card

Despite entering as the underdog, Real Salt Lake capitalized on Ostrák's red card and a Sergi Solans brace to cruise to a lopsided MLS win.

Real Salt Lake rout St. Louis City SC 3-0 as Solans brace punishes red card

Nobody at America First Field expected a rout like this, least of all one favoring Real Salt Lake. Going into the match, our projection gave the home side just a 30% chance of winning, compared to 43% for St. Louis City SC. What actually happened was the exact opposite: 3-0 for the home team, against a visiting side that was down to ten men before halftime and never found a way to respond.

The match, part of the MLS regular season, was decided in a brutal 18-minute stretch spanning the end of the first half and the start of the second. Sergi Solans opened the scoring in the 40th minute with a close-range right-footed finish off an assist from Morgan Guilavogui, and just two minutes later the game changed completely: Tomás Ostrák picked up a second yellow card for dangerous play and left St. Louis City SC with ten men.

With the extra man, Real Salt Lake wasted little time extending the lead. In the 52nd minute, Dominik Marczuk rifled a right-footed shot from outside the box into the top corner off a pass from Luc De Fougerolles. Six minutes later, in the 58th, Solans completed his brace with a low finish by the left post, capping a counterattack started by Saba Lobjanidze. The 3-0 scoreline was set from there, and what followed was more a formality than a contest.

A dominant performance backed by the numbers

The match stats confirm what was evident on the field: a Real Salt Lake side that was clearly superior in every category, from possession to shots on goal.

The number that best sums up the gap is the expected goals tally calculated after the fact from the match's shots: Real Salt Lake generated 3.153 xG, while St. Louis City SC managed just 0.156. This isn't a projection or a forecast, but a read of what actually happened on the field, and it makes clear that the home side's margin wasn't simply inflated by the red card: there was real offensive volume behind it.

That early red card really does reframe the whole match: before losing Ostrák, St. Louis City SC had shown some signs of life, including a shot from Rafael Navarro in the 33rd minute that was saved. But playing more than 45 minutes a man down against an opponent that already controlled possession and chances proved an impossible task. Our pre-match projection had pointed to a close contest, with St. Louis City SC even favored and combined expected goals of 3.04 split between both sides; the reality turned into a one-sided affair in favor of the home team, with the red card as the turning point.

What the result means in the standings

In the Western Conference, St. Louis City SC came into the match sitting third with 51 points from 31 games played (14 wins, 9 draws, 8 losses), while Real Salt Lake sat in 10th place with 39 points, also from 31 games (11 wins, 6 draws, 14 losses). The 12-point gap between the two sides in the standings did nothing to stop the home team from imposing itself with authority on this particular afternoon.

For Real Salt Lake, coached by Pablo Mastroeni, the win comes with a Sergi Solans brace and an attacking performance that far exceeded expectations. For Yoann Damet's St. Louis City SC, Ostrák's red card defined a match that slipped away from them right as they were starting to find some rhythm. With this result, both clubs continue chasing their respective goals for the rest of the season, though on this night at America First Field, it was clear that the standings on paper don't always dictate what happens on the field.
