Real Sociedad and Celta Vigo Split the Points in Scoreless Draw at Anoeta
Real Sociedad was far the better side with 16 shots, but could not break down Celta's defense in a LaLiga match that ended goalless.
Eleven shots and a three-to-one edge in corners were not enough for Real Sociedad to pick the lock on Celta Vigo's defense. At Anoeta, the score finished 0-0, a draw that leaves mixed feelings: home dominance, but no goal to show for it once again.
The match, part of LaLiga, saw Real Sociedad take charge almost immediately. As early as the 3rd minute came the first warning, a shot from Orri Oskarsson that ran into the visiting defense after a pass from Igor Zubeldia. The home side's superiority was clear from the opening stretch: between forced corners and chances inside the box, Celta was pushed back time and again.
Jon Martin tested the keeper with a header in the 12th minute, Beñat Turrientes drew a solid save with a low shot in the 17th, and Mikel Oyarzabal was denied again in the 20th after an assist from Oskarsson. That same minute, Takefusa Kubo wasted a counterattack by firing over the crossbar. Real Sociedad kept pressing forward, but the visiting goal held firm.
Celta, for its part, barely showed up in the first half. Ilaix Moriba tried his luck from distance without success in the 9th minute and again in the 39th, and Javi Rueda also had a go from outside the box, but without truly troubling the home side. The first half ended 0-0, with Real Sociedad having created more but unable to turn it into goals.
More of the Same in the Second Half
The second half did not change the script much. Mikel Oyarzabal missed a direct free kick in the 52nd minute that sailed well over, and Luka Sucic, on the field after the home side's double substitution in the 60th minute, tried his luck in the 76th with a shot that was blocked. Celta found its clearest outlet in Iago Aspas, who also came on during that round of changes: the forward fired a low shot in the 79th minute that was saved, and tried again in the 86th from inside the box after an assist from Pablo Duran.
The closing stretch was a Real Sociedad siege, as the home side piled on corners and long-range attempts through Jon Aramburu, Alex Marchal and Goncalo Guedes, the latter seeing two shots blocked in stoppage time. The referee added five minutes at the end of the match, time the home team used to keep pressing, but Celta withstood the pressure and came away from Anoeta with a point.
Yellow cards went to Yangel Herrera, Yoel Lago, Marcos Alonso, Couhaib Driouech and Luka Sucic, though none of them altered the flow of the match beyond a brief stoppage.
The Numbers Tell the Same Story
| Statistic | Real Sociedad | Celta Vigo |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 50.9 | 49.1 |
| Shots | 16 | 7 |
| Shots on target | 5 | 2 |
| Corners | 11 | 3 |
| Passes | 527 | 522 |
| Fouls committed | 15 | 11 |
The shot count tells the story of the match clearly: Real Sociedad fired off more than double its rival's attempts and generated, by our post-match estimate, an xG of 1.23 compared to Celta's 0.64. Those numbers back up the home side's dominance, though in soccer, efficiency does not always match the volume of play.
The result also runs counter to our pre-match projections: our preview gave a 41% chance of a home win, 27% for a draw and 32% for an away win, with expected goals of 1.58 for Real Sociedad and 1.36 for Celta. The draw, which was the least likely of the three outcomes in our model, ended up being what actually happened.
In the standings, both sides came into the match needing points. Real Sociedad sits at 4 points from 4 matches played (one win, one draw and two losses), while Celta has 2 points from the same number of matches, with two draws and two losses, still without a win. The gap between the two in the table is just 2 points, a sign that neither club is enjoying a comfortable start to the season.
Anoeta is left with the feeling of a missed opportunity for the home side, which dominated without reward, and with a point that tastes like survival for Celta. The next fixture will show whether this draw was a stumble or the start of a turnaround for either team.
