Reggie Cannon's 57th-minute header lifts Colorado Rapids past Real Salt Lake
The home side controlled the match from start to finish in MLS action and took all three points at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.

A Reggie Cannon header in the 57th minute was enough for the Colorado Rapids to claim all three points against Real Salt Lake. 1-0 at Dick's Sporting Goods Park, in an MLS match the Rapids dominated from start to finish, though it took them well into the second half to turn that control into a goal.
The home side came out with intent from the opening whistle. Just a minute in, Youssef Maziz had already tested the Real Salt Lake goal with a shot that flew just wide of the right post, and in the 4th minute it was Hamzat Ojediran who forced a save from the visiting goalkeeper. Real Salt Lake, for its part, was mostly content to soak up pressure and look for a quick outlet: Samuel Junqua had the visitors' best chance with a header in the 17th minute that drifted just wide off a corner kick.
The Rapids kept pressing. Georgi Minoungou tried twice between the 24th and 27th minutes, and Rafael Navarro hovered around the opposing box for the entire first half without finding a breakthrough. The first 45 ended scoreless, but with a clear gap in ball control that already hinted at what was to come.
The goal that broke the deadlock
The second half opened with Real Salt Lake looking for a bit more through Pablo Ruiz, who fired twice from outside the box without success. But the script flipped in the 57th minute: from a corner kick, Youssef Maziz whipped in a precise cross and Reggie Cannon rose on the right side to head it home from point-blank range, making it 1-0.
From there, the Rapids managed the lead without easing off. Donavan Phillip, who had come on for Maziz, tested the keeper in the 79th minute, and late on Loïc Williams headed just wide from close range in the 84th minute while Paxten Aaronson rattled the left post with a shot in the 86th minute. The match also had its share of yellow cards on both sides, though none of them altered the course of the game.
The numbers back up the dominance
The stats confirm what was clear on the field: Colorado Rapids were far superior in controlling the match.
| Stat | Colorado Rapids | Real Salt Lake |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 64.3 | 35.7 |
| Shots | 14 | 4 |
| Shots on target | 4 | - |
| Corners | 7 | 1 |
| Passes | 587 | 332 |
| Fouls committed | 13 | 21 |
The post-match xG calculated from the shots taken also reflects that gap: 1.293 for the Rapids compared to just 0.133 for Real Salt Lake, a difference that makes clear who generated the real danger over the 90 minutes.
It's worth comparing this to what was projected before kickoff. Our preview gave the home side a 38% chance of winning, 29% for a draw and 33% for Real Salt Lake, with expected goals of 1.42 for the Rapids and 1.29 for the visitors. The final result ended up tighter in the home side's favor than those numbers suggested, especially since Real Salt Lake barely came close to matching its projected goal tally.
What it means in the standings
In the Western Conference, Colorado Rapids sit seventh with 31 points from 22 matches played (10 wins, 1 draw, 11 losses), while Real Salt Lake are tenth with 28 points from 21 matches (8 wins, 4 draws, 9 losses). The gap between the two sides in the table is just 3 points, and this win for the Rapids helps narrow it even further with the rest of the season still to play.
