Reggie Cannon's 57th-minute header lifts Colorado Rapids past Real Salt Lake

A Reggie Cannon header in the 57th minute was enough for the Colorado Rapids to claim all three points against Real Salt Lake. 1-0 at Dick's Sporting Goods Park, in an MLS match the Rapids dominated from start to finish, though it took them well into the second half to turn that control into a goal.

The home side came out with intent from the opening whistle. Just a minute in, Youssef Maziz had already tested the Real Salt Lake goal with a shot that flew just wide of the right post, and in the 4th minute it was Hamzat Ojediran who forced a save from the visiting goalkeeper. Real Salt Lake, for its part, was mostly content to soak up pressure and look for a quick outlet: Samuel Junqua had the visitors' best chance with a header in the 17th minute that drifted just wide off a corner kick.

The Rapids kept pressing. Georgi Minoungou tried twice between the 24th and 27th minutes, and Rafael Navarro hovered around the opposing box for the entire first half without finding a breakthrough. The goal that broke the deadlock

The second half opened with Real Salt Lake looking for a bit more through Pablo Ruiz, who fired twice from outside the box without success. But the script flipped in the 57th minute: from a corner kick, Youssef Maziz whipped in a precise cross and Reggie Cannon rose on the right side to head it home from point-blank range, making it 1-0.

From there, the Rapids managed the lead without easing off. Donavan Phillip, who had come on for Maziz, tested the keeper in the 79th minute, and late on Loïc Williams headed just wide from close range in the 84th minute while Paxten Aaronson rattled the left post with a shot in the 86th minute. The match also had its share of yellow cards on both sides, though none of them altered the course of the game.
