River makes it official: Ponzio signs as head coach through August 2027

What began as an emergency fix now has a signed contract and an expiration date: August 2027. River Plate has formalized the new deal with Leonardo Ponzio as head coach, officially putting the word "interim" in the past.

The news isn't just a symbolic nod to one of the club's most beloved captains of the last decade. There's also a significant regulatory reason behind it. The Collective Bargaining Agreement for Head Coaches, which governs the profession under the AFA's jurisdiction, is clear on this point: a coach can run a team on an interim basis, without a registered contract, for a maximum of two matches. Beyond that limit, the club is required to formalize the situation.

Ponzio had already gone past that threshold in charge of the first team, so River had no room left to keep waiting. But there was a second requirement in play as well: the same regulations mandate that any head coaching contract run for a minimum of one year. Signing him for just a few months as a stopgap simply wasn't an option.

That's why the club decided to go straight for a long-term agreement. Ponzio's deal doesn't just meet that minimum threshold, it goes well beyond it, running for more than a year and reaching into mid-2027. In doing so, River clears up any administrative uncertainty and gives solid institutional backing to a coaching setup that, until now, had functioned internally almost like a temporary arrangement.

From on-field leader to bench anchor

For years, Ponzio was one of the backbones of the River squad, the kind of player who showed up in tough moments and carved out a significant place in the club's recent history. Now, on the other side of the touchline, the challenge takes a different shape but the essence remains the same: holding the team together, this time through footballing decisions and results that justify the trust the club's leadership has placed in him.

The contract through 2027 gives him time and institutional support to work without the pressure of a month-to-month renewal hanging over him. Now, once again, it's up to what happens on the field.
