River Has Only One Path to the Libertadores: Win the Clausura

After losing the Superclasico and falling out of Annual Table contention, Leo Ponzio's team must first lock up a spot in the round of 16, then win three straight knockout rounds plus the final to return to the Cup in 2027.

River Has Only One Path to the Libertadores: Win the Clausura

The Superclasico left behind more than just a painful loss. It left River with only one possible road back to the Copa Libertadores in 2027, and right now that road means winning absolutely everything in front of them.

The defeat to Boca slammed the door shut on any chance of reaching the Libertadores through the Annual Table. That door no longer exists. So the team coached by Leo Ponzio has just one bullet left, and it's a demanding one: come out champion of the 2026 Clausura Tournament.

Before even thinking about that, there's a prior step that doesn't fully depend on River itself: securing a spot in the round of 16. And here's the curious part, because that spot could be sealed before the Millonario even takes the field again. Monday's slate, with Independiente Rivadavia hosting Banfield and Atletico Tucuman facing Argentinos, could hand River its ticket through without needing to add another point.

The trip to Mar del Plata, with or without qualification already sealed

If those results fall River's way, the club could travel to Mar del Plata to face Aldosivi with its spot in the round of 16 already locked up, which would take some of the pressure off that match. But if they don't fall right, there's no drama either: a win over the Tiburon is enough on its own to advance to the next round.

What doesn't change, no matter what happens on that matchday, is the size of the challenge waiting afterward. To have any shot at the 2027 Libertadores, River needs to qualify for the round of 16, then win three rounds in a row, and at the end of that road, lift the Clausura trophy. There are no shortcuts, no table combinations to bail the team out: it's win the tournament or nothing.

That's where the one real consolation in this story shows up: if that ultimate goal slips away in the final, not everything is lost. Winning the last match of the tournament, even if it's not the title decider, still guarantees a spot in next year's Copa Sudamericana. In other words, there's a prize for the runner up effort, even if it's a smaller one than everyone at Nunez is hoping for.

So the picture is clear, even if it isn't simple: River first needs the round of 16, then three knockout rounds with zero margin for error, and finally the title match. All or almost nothing, with the Sudamericana as a safety net if the Libertadores doesn't end up coming through this particular road.
