Roma demolishes Slovan Bratislava 4-0 in Champions League rout

With goals from Hermoso, Molina, Pisilli and Malen, the Italian side put the game away in just 57 minutes and dominated with 26 shots to the visitors' one.

Roma demolishes Slovan Bratislava 4-0 in Champions League rout

Barely four minutes into the first quarter hour, it was already clear that tonight at the Stadio Olimpico would be a party for only one team. By the final whistle, the scoreboard read Roma 4, Slovan Bratislava 0, an outright beatdown in the Champions League that left the Italian side beaming and the Slovak visitors with no answers.

The game broke open early. In the 20th minute, Mario Hermoso rose from close range to head home the opener, finishing off a header from Daniele Ghilardi following a set piece. Before halftime, Nahuel Molina doubled the lead with a point blank finish that gave the visiting goalkeeper no chance, and Roma went into the locker room with a comfortable 2-0 edge.

The second half picked up right where the first left off. Just six minutes after the restart, Niccolò Pisilli curled a left footed finish from the top of the box, assisted by Donyell Malen, to make it 3-0. And the scoring spree didn't stop there: in the 55th minute, Wesley went down in the box after a foul by César Blackman, and the referee pointed to the spot. Malen, who had already played a part in the third goal with his assist, made no mistake from twelve yards to make it 4-0 in the 57th minute, a scoreline that would hold for the rest of the night.

Total control, no debate

The match statistics tell exactly the story that played out on the field: Roma did whatever it wanted, with the ball and with its opponent.

With 26 shots to just one from Slovan Bratislava, the gap in offensive intensity was total. That superiority also shows up in our post match expected goals estimate, calculated from the shots taken during the match: Roma generated an xG of 4.1, almost exactly matching the four goals it ended up scoring, while Slovan Bratislava managed only a negligible 0.039, a reflection of how rarely it threatened the opposing goal.

Before kickoff, our projection gave Roma a 51% chance of winning, with a 26% chance of a draw and 23% for Slovan Bratislava, along with a forecast of 1.82 expected goals for the home side and 1.18 for the visitors, for a projected total of 3. Reality blew past those expectations: Roma didn't just win, it did so with a dominance that doubled the projected goal total for the match, while Slovan Bratislava never even came close to generating danger.

What the result means for the standings

In the league phase standings, Roma came into this match with 4 points from three outings, the product of one win, one draw and one loss. Slovan Bratislava, meanwhile, had zero points from its three previous matches, with no wins and no draws. The gap between the two sides in the table stood at 4 points before this result, a gap that this rout only confirmed on the field.

With changes such as Matías Soulé coming on for an injured Lorenzo Pellegrini, and Santiago Castro and Devyne Rensch entering after the converted penalty, Roma managed the rest of the match without any scares, even looking to pad its goal tally with shots from Santiago Castro, Daniele Ghilardi and Leonardo Balerdi that failed to find the net. Slovan Bratislava, for its part, could only muster a header from Peter Pokorny that sailed wide to the left.

The night at the Olimpico produced an offensive showcase from Roma, which had the match wrapped up in just 57 minutes and used that dominance to sign one of the most lopsided routs of the matchday in this edition of the Champions League.
