Ronald Araújo to Liverpool, Zalazar to Lisbon for $30 Million: Uruguay's 2026/27 Player Exodus

Ten moves, four continents, one passport. The 2026/27 transfer window once again showed something that's practically routine by now: Uruguayan players scattering across the globe, from the Premier League to Saudi Arabia, with stops in Portugal, Ukraine and Brazilian soccer along the way. And we're not talking about bench filler here: there are some heavyweight names in the mix.

The biggest story belongs to Ronald Araújo, who after years as a fixture at Barcelona packed his bags for the Premier League. He joined Liverpool on a season-long loan, with a buy option in the neighborhood of 55 million euros. The 27-year-old center back leaves behind 213 appearances and 14 goals in the Barça shirt and makes his debut in England, something that would have seemed unthinkable not long ago for a player so closely tied to Catalonia.

Darwin Núñez, meanwhile, is staying in Saudi Arabia but changing clubs: he moved from Al-Hilal to Al-Diriyah on a one-year loan with no purchase option. After a stretch with limited playing time, the Artigas native needs minutes, and that's where he'll look to find them.

Settling In Across Europe

José María Giménez closed out a decade at Atlético Madrid and now faces something new: he joined Deportivo La Coruña on loan through June 2027, with a purchase option. The newly promoted Galician club bet on his experience to shore up a defense that needs immediate stability.

Sebastián Cáceres, for his part, made the jump many had been expecting: he left América de México to sign with Celta Vigo for roughly five million euros, on a contract through 2030. At 27, he's making his European debut after stops at Liverpool de Montevideo and in Mexican soccer, a long road to reach LaLiga.

England is also home to Álvaro Rodríguez, who left Elche to wear the Bournemouth shirt. At 22, coming off a season with seven goals and five assists, the deal was worth close to 25 million euros, with Real Madrid retaining 50 percent of his economic rights.

Portugal, perhaps, produced the most eye-catching deal financially. Rodrigo Zalazar moved from Sporting Braga to Sporting Lisbon for around 30 million euros, signing through 2031. The fee places him among the biggest transfers in recent Portuguese soccer history, hardly the norm for a Uruguayan midfielder.

Facundo Bernal also made his European leap: after his spell at Fluminense, he joined Real Betis, who paid close to 9.5 million euros for full ownership of his rights, on a deal running through 2031.

Ukraine, Mexico and Brazil, Other Destinations

Alan Matturro took a different path: he departed Genoa, which held his rights, and signed with Shakhtar Donetsk through July 2031. He was coming off a loan spell at Levante, so the move was worked out as a direct deal between Genoa and the Ukrainian club. Federico Viñas returned to Liga MX with Toluca, after a loan at Real Oviedo and a permanent departure from León. The fee was around 13 million dollars, a fresh chance for a forward who already knows Mexican soccer well.

And Luciano Rodríguez came back to Brazil: he's temporarily leaving Saudi club NEOM SC, which had paid around 20 million euros for him, to join Cruzeiro on a one-year loan. It's a return that opens up a new opportunity for him after his time in the Middle East.

Between established national team names like Araújo, Núñez and Giménez, and players still working to carve out a place in Europe like Cáceres, Rodríguez and Bernal, the map once again confirms something that no longer comes as a surprise: few countries this small export so much soccer talent to so many different corners of the planet.
