Ronaldo header lifts Al Nassr past Abha 2-1 at home

Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring with a header in the 21st minute, and Al Nassr never let go of the lead: the Riyadh club held on for a 2-1 win over Abha at Al-Awwal Park, in a match it controlled from start to finish but made harder than it needed to be down the stretch.

The first goal came from a set piece: a corner kick, a cross into the box from Ângelo, and a header from Ronaldo into the top left corner to make it 1-0. Before that, Al Nassr had already given warning signs through chances from Ângelo, Samú Costa and Ronaldo himself, who also rattled the right post with a shot in the 37th minute. Abha had its own scare for the home side when Alimami Gory hit the left post in the 23rd minute, but the visitors went into halftime down by just one.

In the second half, Al Nassr stretched the lead through Abdullah Al Hamddan, who finished with his right foot from the center of the box in the 57th minute to make it 2-0. It looked like the game was settled, but Abha pulled one back in the 74th minute with a brilliant free kick from Nabil Fekir, who curled the ball low inside the left post to make it 2-1, the final score. There were no more scares after that: Al Nassr managed the lead the rest of the way, with Ronaldo even testing the goalkeeper again with a shot saved near the far post in the 87th minute.

The numbers back up the dominance

The stats leave little doubt about who controlled the match. Al Nassr racked up 19 shots to Abha's 5, with 66.7% possession and nearly double the corners.

The expected goals figures calculated from the match's shots also reflect that gap in attacking volume: 1.804 xG for Al Nassr compared to just 0.271 for Abha, a gap that helps explain why the home side had several more chances to seal the game before Fekir's late strike.

Our preview had given Al Nassr an 87% chance of winning, against 10% for a draw and just 3% for Abha, with expected goals of 3.32 for the home side against 0.64 for the visitors. The result ended up confirming the favorite, though with a tighter scoreline than that goal projection suggested: the 2-1 finish fell well short of the three-plus goals we had forecast for Al Nassr.

Abha, meanwhile, remains at the bottom of the table with just 1 point after 6 matchdays, the product of 0 wins, 1 draw and 5 losses. For Al Nassr, the result confirms a strong run at home in the tournament; for Abha, Fekir's goal offers some consolation, but it isn't enough to paper over a gap that, based on the match numbers, was wide from start to finish.
