Rondón's Late Double Rescues Pachuca in Wild 2-2 Draw With Tijuana

Pachuca clawed back from two goals down and sealed the equalizer in the 89th minute thanks to a brace from Salomón Rondón against Club Tijuana.

Rondón's Late Double Rescues Pachuca in Wild 2-2 Draw With Tijuana

Salomón Rondón showed up twice at just the right moment, the last one in the 89th minute, to seal a 2-2 draw that Pachuca had to fight tooth and nail for against Club Tijuana. At Estadio Hidalgo, the home side found itself down two goals before halftime and ended up salvaging a point that, given how the final minutes played out, felt almost like a win.

The match, part of the Liga MX season, started with Tijuana striking first. In the 16th minute, Gilberto Mora converted a penalty after a foul by Sergio Rodríguez inside the box, putting Tijuana up 0-1 with a low shot just inside the left post. Pachuca kept probing on the flanks but couldn't find the net, and Tijuana made the most of it, doubling the lead before the break: in the 41st minute, Alejandro Gómez surprised everyone with a long-range strike, assisted by Alan Vega, that found a tricky angle to make it 0-2 at halftime.

The Second-Half Response

Benjamín Mora shook things up at the break with three substitutions at once, and Pachuca came out with a different energy. The changes paid off quickly: in the 54th minute, Salomón Rondón connected on a close-range header, assisted by Nicolás Vallejo, to pull one back and make it 1-2.

From there, the match turned into a Pachuca siege on the visitors' goal. There were shots off the crossbar from Mauricio Isaís and Adrián Alcaraz, a post from Rondón, and several saves that kept the equalizer at bay. The pressure finally paid off in stoppage time: in the 89th minute, Rondón struck again, this time with a point-blank finish off a headed pass from Sergio Barreto, to make it a final 2-2.

What the Numbers Say

Pachuca's dominance in the second half shows up clearly in the match's overall stats: far more possession and a notable edge in shots, though Tijuana made the most of the little it had.

Pachuca's 29 shots to Tijuana's 8 also show up in the post-match expected goals figures: 3.23 for the home side against 2.16 for the visitors. It's a reading that backs up what was seen on the field: Pachuca created more and better chances, but Tijuana was clinical with what it got in the first half.

Our preview had projected a 48% chance of a Pachuca win, 29% for a draw and 23% for a Tijuana win, with expected goals of 1.53 for the home side and 1 for the visitors. The final result ended up landing on that draw, the second most likely outcome, though the path to get there, with Pachuca coming back from two goals down, turned out far more dramatic than any projection could have anticipated.

What It Means in the Standings

In the Liga MX table, Club Tijuana arrived at this match in sixth place with 14 points from 8 games played (4 wins, 2 draws, 2 losses), while Pachuca sat in 11th with 12 points from 9 games (3 wins, 3 draws, 3 losses). The gap between the two was just 2 points before this matchup, and the draw keeps that closeness in the standings intact.

For Pachuca, the point tastes like an incomplete but valuable comeback: they went down by two goals and didn't fold. For Tijuana, meanwhile, there's a lingering sense of a lead that slipped away in the closing minutes, after controlling much of the first half thanks to the efficiency of Mora and Gómez.
