Rosario Central weathers Argentinos Juniors' siege, wins on Ovando header

A header from Ignacio Ovando just before halftime gave Rosario Central a 1-0 win over an Argentinos Juniors side that controlled possession but couldn't find the equalizer.

Rosario Central weathers Argentinos Juniors' siege, wins on Ovando header

A header from Ignacio Ovando, scored right before the break, was enough for Rosario Central to take all three points against Argentinos Juniors at the Gigante de Arroyito. The final score read 1-0, and while the scoreline might look tight, the match had a bit of everything: chances at both ends, a crossbar that came under repeated fire, and an Argentinos Juniors side that pushed until the final whistle without ever finding the equalizer.

The match was part of Argentina's Primera División and pitted together two teams that arrived practically level in Group B's standings: Argentinos Juniors sat in first place with 18 points, and Rosario Central was second, also on 18, separated only by goal difference. Both had played 10 matches, with 5 wins, 3 draws and 2 losses, a parity that today's result did nothing but confirm out on the field.

A back-and-forth first half

Argentinos Juniors came out with intent from the opening whistle. Hernan Lopez tested the keeper from distance in the 3rd minute and threatened again shortly after with a low, angled shot, while Franco Vazquez headed narrowly wide from a corner. Rosario Central answered through Alan Rodriguez and Angel Di Maria, though without finding the target. The game swung end to end, with fouls spread around and several corners for both sides, until the blow that would decide the opening 45 minutes finally arrived.

In the 41st minute, a corner taken by Rosario Central found the head of Ignacio Ovando, who met it from the center of the box and beat the visiting goalkeeper low, just inside the left post. The assist came from Vicente Pizarro's delivery off the corner kick. That goal closed out the first half: 1-0 for the home side.

Rosario Central holds firm

In the second half, Argentinos Juniors took control of the ball and went searching for the equalizer. Franco Vazquez again tested the keeper with a header, Tomas Molina and Gaston Veron also had shots from inside the box, but all of those attempts ended up in the home goalkeeper's hands or off his body. Ovando, in fact, remained a key figure at the other end of the pitch too: in the 64th minute he nearly scored his second with another header that drifted just wide, while on the other flank Rosario Central looked to extend the lead through Jaminton Campaz, who had several tries without luck.

The closing stretch turned into a visiting siege. Argentinos Juniors brought on Alan Alcaraz, Diego Porcel and Matias Gimenez off the bench to freshen up the attack, and between the 80th and 84th minutes produced a string of shots (Copetti, Molina, Veron and Alcaraz) that failed to find a way through. Rosario Central, with Federico Navarro and Facundo Mallo already on the field after substitutions, held its shape until referee Pablo Dovalo blew the final whistle after stoppage time.

What the numbers say

The stats reflect Argentinos Juniors' dominance of possession, which nevertheless never translated into greater clarity in front of goal.

Rosario Central saw less of the ball but made it count: its 6 shots on target against the visitors' 3 speak to an efficiency that proved decisive in the end. According to our estimate based on the match's shots, Rosario Central generated 0.74 expected goals compared to 0.55 for Argentinos Juniors, a gap that supports the final result without being overwhelming.

Beforehand, our model had spread the probabilities fairly evenly: 35% for a Rosario Central win, 36% for a draw and 29% for an Argentinos Juniors win, with total expected goals of 1.8 (0.96 for the home side and 0.84 for the visitors). The way the match played out ended up matching that tight forecast: a close contest, decided by a single goal, right in line with what was expected.

With this result, Rosario Central erased the points gap that had separated it in the standings and drew level on 18 points with Argentinos Juniors, who had come into the match as Group B leaders. Beyond the final numbers, it was a win that leaves the impression of a hard-fought match from start to finish, settled by a well-executed set piece and a defense that weathered the second-half storm.
