Rosario Central becomes Argentine soccer's first 2026 League Champion

Some titles are won on the last matchday, with a last gasp goal and a stadium erupting. Others get settled at a desk, rulebook in hand. Rosario Central's belongs to the second category, but that doesn't make it worth any less: the club from Arroyito has become the first 2026 League Champion in Argentine soccer, a new title the Liga Profesional de Fútbol (LPF) rolled out to crown the most consistent team of the year.

The decision came from the LPF's Executive Committee back in November 2025, when the rulebook governing this season was finalized. Chapter VII, Article 24 spells out exactly how this new overall table is built: add up the points each club earns in the First Zone Phase of the Apertura tournament and the First Zone Phase of the Clausura tournament. Whoever collects the most points across those two phases takes home the trophy.

Why does this matter? Because unlike the old-school annual table, which in other eras mostly served to sort out relegation or international cup berths, this rulebook gave that points total its own name and the status of a national title. It's not the Copa de la Liga, and it's not the champion of a single short tournament: it's a reward for staying consistent across both of the year's competitive windows.

How ties get broken

The rulebook also covers what happens if two or more teams finish level on points. First comes goal difference; if the tie holds, it goes to goals scored; if it's still tied, the 2026 Fair Play table comes into play. And if the deadlock somehow survives all of that, the LPF's Executive Committee settles it by drawing lots. It's a cascading system, built to leave no loose ends in a title making its debut this year.

The relegation spots are a different story: no coin flips or fair play tables apply there. Article 111 of the AFA General Regulations states that those positions are decided by playoff matches, a mechanism with real history and tradition in Argentine soccer.

For Rosario Central, being the first name etched into this new title carries an extra symbolic weight: the club will always be remembered as the pioneer. Central has now added a different kind of star to its collection, one earned not in a final decided by the referee's whistle, but split across two tournaments and confirmed by the rulebook. From here on, every season will carry this extra subplot running alongside the Apertura and Clausura: the quiet fight for consistency, which now has a champion of its own.
