San Lorenzo Has Boca's Number Like No Other Rival in History

There's one fact that makes any Boca fan wince: among every rival the club has faced in its history, none holds a bigger edge than San Lorenzo. And this isn't some statistical quirk from a handful of games. It's the result of more than a century of clashes.

Boca has squared off against hundreds of teams throughout its history, both domestic and international, but only a small group, some 20 clubs, can say they hold a winning record against the Xeneize. That list includes curious cases like Nacional de Floresta, which played Boca just six times between 1910 and 1911 and came out three wins ahead, as well as global powerhouses like Bayern Munich, which won the only two official matches the two clubs ever played: the 1989 Intercontinental Cup... wait, actually the 2001 Intercontinental Cup and the 2025 Club World Cup. Also on that list of clubs with a winning record are names like Milan, Santos, and Nacional de Montevideo.

But none of those cases come close to what San Lorenzo represents. El Ciclon is, right now, the rival with the biggest overall edge over Boca in their all-time series: a five-match advantage after more than 200 official meetings. And that edge is neither new nor accidental.

A Dominance That Started Nearly 40 Years Ago

San Lorenzo has gone an astonishing 79 straight matches without losing the overall head to head with Boca, a streak that began on October 12, 1987, when El Ciclon won 1-0 at La Bombonera. Since that day, it has never given up the lead. The biggest gap San Lorenzo ever opened up was nine matches, back around 1972 and 1973.

All told, Boca and San Lorenzo have met 215 times: El Ciclon has won 83 (scoring 301 goals) and Boca has won 78 (scoring 297 goals), with 53 draws. The numbers are close, but the balance tips toward the blue and red side.

Within that history lies a dark chapter worth remembering. On December 14, 1990, during a Torneo Apertura match, serious incidents broke out at halftime that ended with the death of a Boca fan. The Disciplinary Tribunal ruled the match a loss for both teams, a decision that remains a somber mark on the rivalry. There's also a Boca win that doesn't count in the official tally: a 2-0 result from 1919 that was voided after that tournament ended without a resolution.

The first official meeting between the two clubs dates back to November 7, 1915, in the Primera Division championship, a 5-0 rout in Boca's favor. A lot has happened since then: of the 205 matches played in domestic league competitions, San Lorenzo has won 77 and Boca 75, with 52 draws. In domestic cup competitions, El Ciclon leads 3 to 2, with one draw. In international tournaments, San Lorenzo is also ahead, 3 to 1. The only stretch where Boca clearly comes out on top is the amateur era, with 8 wins, 2 draws, and just 1 loss.
