Santa Clara and Sporting Braga Play to Scoreless Draw in Ponta Delgada

Neither Santa Clara nor Sporting Braga found a way to break the deadlock at the Estádio de São Miguel. The 0-0 result leaves a similar taste for both sides: points shared, but little in the way of goalmouth drama across 90 minutes.

The match, part of Liga Portugal, saw more back and forth in midfield than genuine scoring chances. As early as the 5th minute, Adrian Barisic tried a header off a João Moutinho cross, but it was cleared away. Sporting Braga followed up shortly after with a long-range effort from Jean-Baptiste Gorby, set up by Ricardo Horta, which also failed to find the target. The clearest chance of the first half came in the 18th minute, when Jovan Milosevic unleashed a left-footed strike from the center of the box off a Horta cross that whistled just past the crossbar, the biggest scare Santa Clara suffered in the opening 45 minutes.

The home side answered more with control than real danger. Vinícius Lopes tried his luck from outside the box in the 19th minute without success, and in first-half stoppage time, Gonçalo Paciência and Djé Tavares gave warning signs with shots that the goalkeepers handled without much trouble. With that script, referee Fábio José Costa Veríssimo sent the teams to the locker rooms with a scoreline that would not budge for the rest of the night.

The second half followed the same pattern: isolated attempts, little penetration and no finishing touch. Brenner tried early, in the 49th minute, with a shot stopped near the right post. Sporting Braga answered through Ricardo Horta, who could not properly connect with a Víctor Gómez cross in the 53rd minute and then, in the 68th, tried from a tight angle without troubling the opposing goal. Tiago Ribeiro also had a go for Santa Clara in the 60th minute, sending the ball well over the bar.

With the match bogged down, both coaches turned to their benches. Petit brought on fresh legs in Daniel Borges, Welinton Torrão and Fernando in search of a spark up front, while Carlos Vicens countered with the introductions of Gabriel Silva, Denis Huseinbasic, Sergio Barcia and Demir Ege Tiknaz. None of the substitutions changed much: the best chances of the closing stretch were a Vinícius Lopes shot in the 85th minute, a weak Welinton Torrão header in the 86th and one last attempt from Fernando in stoppage time that flew well over the bar. The referee added four extra minutes in the second half, but there were no further alarms.

The statistics reflect the evenness of the contest fairly well. Sporting Braga controlled the ball somewhat more, but Santa Clara generated a few more shots, though with the same lack of accuracy in front of goal.
