The Colombian club has not conceded a goal in four matches and will face the home side on Wednesday without Balanta available.

Santa Fe carries a four-game shutout streak into the Monumental

Four matches. Zero goals allowed. In a competition where one lapse can end your run, that number says more than any tactical breakdown. Santa Fe arrives in Buenos Aires with that card in hand to face River Plate in the second leg of the round of 16 in the Copa Sudamericana, and it's no accident: no one has found a way through this defense in quite a while.

Let's run through who has run into that wall. First it was Peñarol, in Montevideo, in the final matchday of the Libertadores group stage. Then Caracas, across both legs of the Sudamericana playoff round. And most recently River Plate itself, in the first leg of this round of 16 played in Bogota. Three different opponents, three different styles, the same result: zero goals.

What stands out is that Santa Fe hasn't been able to field the same back line twice during this run. Injuries have forced Uruguayan coach Pablo Repetto to shuffle pieces constantly. Miguel Scarpetta, Victor Moreno, Emanuel Olivera and Kevin Balanta have all rotated through central defense, and yet the team hasn't lost any solidity. The last side to break through that line was Platense, on a header by Augusto Lotti inside the box, back in matchday five of Group E in the Libertadores.

Repetto's setup is straightforward: a back four with a defensive midfielder dropping in to cover spaces whenever the fullbacks push forward. It's a scheme built to avoid getting exposed, something crucial when playing away in a knockout tie. Now, for the second leg at the Monumental, the Uruguayan coach will have to rework the puzzle again: Balanta picked up an injury in the scoreless draw against America in Colombian league play and won't be available.

Repetto himself was clear about what it means to play in Buenos Aires:

"It's going to be different over there against River Plate. When you play knockout rounds like this you have to be strong at home, and they're the favorites. We've put in good performances away from home and we can compete to reach the next round."Pablo Repetto

The other forced change came in goal. An injury to undisputed starter Andres Mosquera opened the door for Weimar Asprilla, who rose to the occasion at El Campin. His first save was a standout one, tipping a header from River defender Lautaro Rivero onto the post. After the scoreless draw in Bogota, the goalkeeper explained where that confidence comes from:

"It's the work we've been putting in with the goalkeeping staff. It's the confidence the group itself has given me. You have to repay that trust."Weimar Asprilla

The challenge now is to hold that level in a stadium where River tends to dictate terms. Santa Fe knows it isn't the favorite, but it also knows its defensive strength has given it a puncher's chance in every knockout tie this year. The second leg is set for Wednesday, August 26, at 7:30 p.m. Colombia time, at the Estadio Monumental.
