Santa Fe and River Cancel Each Other Out at El Campín: Goalless Draw in Copa Sudamericana Round of 16
The home side deserved more with the better chances, but a lack of finishing left the tie wide open ahead of the second leg.

Independiente Santa Fe and River Plate played out a 0-0 draw at El Campín that left more questions than answers ahead of the second leg of the Round of 16 in the Copa Sudamericana. The home side was the sharper team for long stretches of the match, but ran into a lack of finishing time and again, as well as an alert visiting goalkeeper at the right moments.
A back and forth match without goals
The game opened with intensity from the first minute: almost as soon as play began, Lautaro Rivero tried a header for River that forced a response with the ball skimming the crossbar. Santa Fe answered quickly, in the 5th minute, with a low shot from Hugo Rodallega that ran just past the post. The home side gradually took control of midfield and created its best chances through Nahuel Bustos, who tested his luck twice near the box in the 13th and 14th minutes without finding the target.
The clearest chance of the first half came in the 40th minute, when Bustos, after a counterattack set up by Jáder Obrian, cracked a shot off the left post. It was the clearest sign yet that Santa Fe deserved more than a draw at that stage. River, for its part, had its best offensive threat through Ángel Correa and a long-range shot from Aníbal Moreno in the 28th minute, which was also saved.
The second half followed a similar script: Santa Fe kept pushing through Rodallega, who missed two clear chances inside the box in the 71st and 72nd minutes, and Franco Fagúndez, who headed over from close range in the 87th. River, after bringing on Thiago Almada and Joaquín Freitas from the bench, tried to control the tempo without seriously threatening the opposing goal. The match closed out with a lengthy seven minutes of stoppage time, and neither team could find the goal that would have broken the deadlock.
The numbers behind the match
The stats reflect a match that was even in possession but lopsided in terms of chances created, with Santa Fe far more dangerous going forward despite holding slightly less of the ball.
| Stat | Independiente Santa Fe | River Plate |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 47.8 | 52.2 |
| Shots | 9 | 3 |
| Shots on target | 3 | 2 |
| Corners | 2 | 2 |
| Passes | 401 | 439 |
| Fouls committed | 10 | 16 |
The most striking figure is the expected goals count: based on our estimate calculated from the match's shots, Santa Fe posted an xG of 1.115 compared to just 0.224 for River. That gap confirms the Colombian side was clearly superior in creating danger, even if it couldn't turn that into a goal.
What the preview said and what happened
Before the match, our projection gave Santa Fe a 30% chance of winning, a 35% chance of a draw and a 35% chance for River, with an estimated 1.92 total goals between the two sides. The final result matched the draw scenario we had anticipated, though the way the game played out wasn't as even as those numbers suggested: Santa Fe dominated when it came to clear-cut chances, while River was largely limited to holding on and managing the result.
What the draw leaves behind
The 0-0 at El Campín leaves the tie completely open heading into the second leg. Santa Fe will have plenty to lament, especially Bustos' shot off the post and Rodallega's missed chances in the second half, while River will be satisfied to have kept a clean sheet away from home. Neither team managed to impose definitive control, and everything will be decided in the next chapter of this Round of 16 tie.
