Santa Fe and América de Cali Hit with Sanctions Over August 22 Bogotá Violence

A 1-1 draw ended up carrying far more weight than the final score suggested. What should have been just another afternoon of Liga BetPlay action turned into a serious problem for Independiente Santa Fe and América de Cali, after Dimayor formalized sanctions over the serious incidents that took place in Bogotá on August 22.

The match, part of matchday six of the tournament, had to be partially suspended when a clash between rival fan groups that began in the stands spilled down onto the field itself. Players had no choice but to sprint toward the locker room as police worked to bring the situation under control. Once order was restored, the game resumed and finished 1-1.

Before Dimayor issued its ruling, Bogotá's city government had already announced its own measures. Among them, it denied América de Cali something the club had specifically requested: the chance to play as the home side in the capital. The city also tightened control over the fan groups known as "barras," banning the entry of banners and instruments for a stretch of no fewer than 20 matchdays.

Dimayor's sporting and financial sanctions

With the full case file in hand, Dimayor opted to strike on two fronts: sporting and financial. And it was clear which club the governing body held more responsible. Santa Fe, as the home team, and therefore the party responsible for guaranteeing security at the stadium, received the harsher punishment.

The Bogotá side must serve two full matchdays of stadium closure and pay a fine of $15,758,145. América de Cali, meanwhile, was sanctioned with one matchday without fans at its home venue and a fine of $14,007,240.

Beyond their financial impact, the figures and punishments send a clear message: responsibility for what happens both inside and outside the stadium is no longer confined strictly to the action on the field. Both clubs will now have to play without their fans during that stretch, which in practice also strips them of that extra boost from the home crowd, right at a stage of the season when every point in the standings starts to carry real weight.

It remains to be seen whether these sanctions serve as a genuine deterrent against a repeat of what happened on August 22, or whether they end up as just another chapter in a story the Liga BetPlay already knows all too well.
