Santiago Gimenez: From Feyenoord Killer to AC Milan Reject

Just a year ago, he was the killer who had Rotterdam delirious. Today, Santiago Gimenez can't even count on a spot in the squad list. The Mexican's story at AC Milan has turned into a countdown, and the transfer window could be his last way out before he's pushed completely to the margins of the team.

One number sums it all up: at Feyenoord, Gimenez scored 65 goals in 105 games, an outrageous ratio for any striker in Europe. At Milan, meanwhile, he's managed just seven goals in nearly a year and a half wearing the rossonero jersey. The gap isn't just statistical, it's a different footballing planet: he went from being the face of a rise in the Netherlands to a constant question mark in Italy.

A physical problem that turned chronic

Injuries have a lot to do with this decline. Gimenez is still dealing with the effects of a fracture suffered in November 2025 that kept him out for nearly five months, until his return in late March. Even then, he never got back the scoring instinct that made him famous in the Eredivisie. Then came another blow: an injury during the 2026 World Cup that kept him from joining preseason training under new head coach Ruben Amorim, who replaced Massimiliano Allegri on the Milan bench.

The Portuguese coach, who arrived from Manchester United, hasn't hidden the fact that the Mexican's future at the club depends on finding a new destination before the window closes. In his press conference ahead of the match against Venezia, he was direct about it:

The number is a bit alarming. Gimenez's last goal in the Italian league came on May 9, 2025, a left-footed strike that salvaged a draw against Bologna. Since then, nothing in the league. He did score after that, but in the Coppa Italia, on September 23, 2025, in a 3-0 rout of Lecce. That remains his most recent goal in the Milan jersey.

His last official match was, once again, against Bologna: a home defeat on May 24, 2026, sharing the frontline with Frenchman Christopher Nkunku, who's no longer on the roster.

The contrast with his time at Feyenoord remains the strongest argument in the Mexican's favor: there, he sent himself off by scoring in his very last match. Now the question is whether some European club still believes that killer exists, or whether the Italian chapter becomes the one that stopped his career right when he seemed unstoppable.
